Ok...
I did what I was always afraid to do.
Added up how much I have spent on my 928 over the past 8 years of ownership.
It came to close to $60,000.
Which is about $600 a month.
Obviously, some of my repairs were upgrades, like s4 suspension and brakes, and swapping in a black interior, and a repaint... But mostly repairs.
Just something to think about, if you plan on keeping an OB alive.
You had better be willing to do your own work, or be willing to spend
a lot of money, and not worry about it.
So even though I have replaced and repaired almost everything on my car,
and it is problem-free, I am thinking about the logic of my obsession.
Is this really a wise move?
I could have purchased a pretty nice new car for $60,000/$600 a month.
New Viper, Z06, Jaguar, 996, etc...
And had a lot less hassles...
I love my 928, but I am really looking at this, and wondering if this is really smart money management.
If nothing else, this posting should help new owners decide if they really want to get into one of these cars. Obviously, many people get off with very little in the way of repairs. But I have had a fair share of all the major ones. Heads, radiator, AC, alternator, head gaskets, transmission, torque tube, motor mounts, suspension, leaking hoses, seals, etc, etc... And it all adds up... If you want to keep your car running like new, and not leaking.

Good God thats scary. When ever you have a old car no matter what brand it is, it is very expensive to keep them up. Granted it would be nice to go down to the local auto parts store and get stuff for the ride, but I love the 928 as we all do, and it isnt cheep. A friend of mine owns a 72 Pontiac TA with a 455 H.O. and he has put probly close to that and is still not done. These old American muscle car are just to damn expensive now days. 928's are MUCH cheeper to buy and maintain than those. It definitly is personal preferance on the types of cars that we love but in my oppinion it is the best bang for the buck out there. Maybe I should chime in after my next repair bill. If you love the keep it, if it is time for a change go for it.

I *LOVE* the car, but DAMN!
The thing is, that I have never done a ground-up restoration to my car like Jeff McVicar is doing.
If I did, I would feel like I have a new car. But in my case, despite fixing everything that
has ever gone wrong with the car, I still have constant upkeep on old switches that
go bad, old AC vaccuum solenoids that go bad, and all kinds of odd, age-related
things like that. They aren't expensive, but they are annoying.
As far as the question about the paint job, I actually paid for two paint jobs.
Once, when I first got it, because the original schifferblaumetallic blue paint
was fading. And then later, after swapping the black interior, repainted
the car again, as a color change to metallic grey. Like I said, many of my
costs are actually things I did to upgrade the car. To make it how I would
like it to be. Which is cool and fun and all, but still expensive in the long run.
I guess it is different if you just buy a 928, and drive it, and do the general
maintainance. But if you are the kind of person who likes their car to be
perfect, and preform better, etc, you can end up dumping a lot of money
into an OB. I did the same thing with my 280Z project I had back in
college. I spent probably $15,000 on a $2,500 car. I'm just a car nut...
It's just that I am wondering if the 928 is the best car for hot-rodding
and customizing. It might be better to start from scratch, and put
$60,000 into a kit car, etc...

Not to mention that I still have the bug to get a supercharger, a body kit, new seats, big wheels, big rubber, custom interior, etc, etc, etc...
I do not see this obsession ending.
That is why it scares me.

Wow! I had heard that the rule of thumb for 928 maintenance was around $3000 per year, but unfortunately, you have had some really big ticket items. I feel your pain...

BC, dang Dude that is a bit isn't it
.... there are two ways you can go .... spend lots or spend little. The difference ultimately does show. Can you get that money back? No chance. This is why one MUST select one's car very carefully. Spend that kind of money on a special car and you'll love it forever. Spend it on a run-of-the-mill cheapie and you're screwed, and not comfortable. Personally I've spent a lot also..... but it's been distributed across 9 Porsches.

I've spent more than that on women the last eight years, and I've still always ended up unhappy. I'll keep my cars, they have yet to cheat on me, and when they get b*tchy, I just put them in the garage and cover them up.

BTW, why in the heck did you total up all your costs in the first place? You didn't expect the total to be somewhere around $1.69 did you?
That's kinda the reason I never total up what marriage has "cost" me... Or what raising a child costs me. Don't wanna know.
