Hahahaha!

Again, I put thousands into race headers, jets, engine work, transmission work, paint, body, chrome, etc...

I tried to have different vehicles for different uses.
A reliable Toyota for daily commuting, a 928 for sports car fun, and a bike for extreme speeds.
But I just keep spending money on ALL of them.
But none of them are worth much on the market.

I enjoy them all, but damn!

I need help!

I even painted my SUV to match my 928. How sad is that!?

Hahahahaha!

Sounds like it's time to take a test drive. Or two. There are a lot of really fast cars out there. If you have an itch, scratch it. I recomend buying the car that makes your heart pound ,your hands sweat and leaves you in a panic when you think someone else is going to buy it out from under you. Drive all the big guns. Even if you don't buy a thing, you could have a ball and find out how much progress the automobile has made in the last few years. Some people have put more money into therapy than you have into your car and they are still not happy. Old porsches aren't meant to be perfect, they are meant to be driven and driven hard, with a whine and a wail, tires humming, brakes cooking, "I tried to break it but I can't". "Jeese, I gotta slow down for that next one.'' If you car doesn't do that for you, get that viper and sign up for a Skip Barber Racing course. Or keep putting money into the old girl and do the car show circuit. Of course there's always motorcycles for fast relief. Or women. Seriously, you could even buy a new mustang and SC that puppy. New, Perfect, Fast, Custom and Waxable. Have fun with it. Then, when you have your new toy, sell me your old one. Enjoy.

My logic was that not having car payments, would add up in the long run in my favor.
The 928 was a perfect example.
Rather than buy a Viper, Ferarri, or something I would need to take a loan for,
I got a Porsche that was very fast, looks great, and is a great car, for an AMAZING price.
And no payments! It looked like the deal of a lifetime.
But adding up all the repairs and improvements, it seems like I could have just taken out that loan,
and actually ended up saving money by getting something that already had 500 horsepower,
instead of trying to spend so much money to make my 928 that fast, etc...

I definitely see where you are coming from. But I think chazz was right; how much has maintenance cost? I know you had to do some big ticket items, but it sounds like you spent a lot on suspension and brake upgrades, plus repaints, which I know aren't cheap.

And if you get that used Viper, are you going to leave it alone? Or will you just focus on the brakes and suspension, since the power is adequate, and end up spending $60K in the end? Plus maintenance. If you like the 928, and are interested in spending $40K, get a GTS, and keep it stock. It should have plenty of performance, and not need any of the big ticket items for a while.

WRT the Viper - it's not a particularly comfortable car - not something you will be happy in a long cruise on the highway with. So consider what you want to do with it if you end up going the Viper route.

I'm thinking that what I will eventually do, is buy a GT or GTS, and drop a supercharger on it.
Ideally, I won't need a bunch of modifications or repairs past that point.
I agree that Vipers are not that comfortable. Nor do I really like the look, or their image.
I would probably lean towards another 928, but a much newer, low-mile example...

But for now, I may sell all my random older vehicles, and buy a new car of some kind.
So that when I get around to the next 928, I will have a very reliable backup vehicle.

sweet! but I think I get it now... think you are just thinking too much... I was spending $40k/yr on maintaining my "fleet" of 4 cars, RV, 2 boats, plane, 8 ATV's/dirt bikes, etc... sometimes I'd stop and wonder what the heck I was doing... but if you have to choose btween giving it to the tax man or on "auto expenses", it's an easy call... as the auditor said (referring to my pcar receipts) "no crime for poor financial judgment" - I laughed in his face and asked, "oh, so I should just give it you instead?, who are you to talk, you pay $100 just for a stupid hammer and drive a toyota!"

my grandfather used to say, "if it floats, flies, rolls or fxxxs, rent it!" he waited till he retired to "have fun", lasted almost 2yrs and died, kids pissed away his savings... some life...

think you're on the right track and it seems like you've got a pretty short list of outstanding upgrades to do... just do it... besides, we don't want to lose your web site - it got me motivated more than once when I was feeling the same way about my old gal...it's the bomb!

regards!
