Troy, You're right about the simplicity of the gear install.

My problem was getting the speed indicator off. Instructions all indicated that lifting or pulling straight up was the key, but the small pin attached to the back of the indicator broke. More research found that several others had had a similar probelm and result. One suggested that a previous repair tech had glued the pin into the hollow shaft that has the two springs attached. Since I found a sticker indicating prior repair of the Speedo, I consider that that may have been the problem I encountered. Sending my unit to Calif. since the hollow tube that the pin is inserted into is far too small for me to drill out.

Be careful in lifting off that speed indicator!!!!

I replaced mine a while back and it also quit working. Coupled with some supsension problems, I've just parked the car until I have time to sort it out.

What would you guys say to just buying a new gauge unit (I know they aren't cheap) so I don't have to worry about this problem for a bit. It wouldn't be unethical as long as I've kept the orginal, right? The tear down process wasn't fun last time and I don't want to do it again for nothing...

My trip meter stuck at about 109.9 the other day. After a reset, it has since rolled past that with no difficultly. It had acutally barely rolled over the 1 in the hundreds place.

After reading this and hearing mention of not reseting while moving, I'll not touch it unless I'm stopped. I only use it for keeping track of mileage, not as an actual trip meter, so that shouldn't be a problem.

The ODO reset does not make a difference, at least not that I can see mechanically inside the speedometer. It's simply an electromagnet that pulls the gears away from their retainers and allows them to reset to zero. The gear that always breaks, will break anyway. It is made of eraser rubber. Rennbay make a very good sturdy replacement, and that will become necessary on every 928 out there, at some point.

My odometer stopped working so it looks like I've got to the same thing one of these days. I've been dreading removing the instrument cluster. Based on my mechanical aptitude I'll reserve a whole day .
