I am also reluctant to use force, however i have heard that the "Hammer Bang Method" works quite well. A friend at work who does alot of his own work on his '69 mustang was explaining it to me just this afternoon when i mentioned i needed to buy a ball joint press. Oh well, it's always nice to have the correct tool for the job.

I've tried the bang-it method without success. Used the press for about the tenth time a couple weks ago. Removed all four ball joints without tearing a boot. Gettin' my money's worth.

As a successful hammer-banger ( with all fingers still attached), there is a certain stubborn, misguided sense of pride that has difficulty in acknowledging progress:
Glen's tip is progress that cannot be ignored, so it is a good tool to add to the kit.

Glen, I'll follow that advice too when I find a local source: these small tools end up at 4-5X the cost with brokerage, etc. added when UPS is the sole shipper to the hinterland
