Ha Ha, My car has more computers than yours does!!
So I'm driving along with my good friend Scott up to check out the DE and PCA race up at PIR (Phoenix Intl Raceway). He remarks to me (being a track Shark kinda guy) "You know this is the first time I've been in a street legal 928 in..." followed shortly thereafter by "What the hell is that clicking noise?" We track the sound down to the passenger side door jamb and that little carpet panel next to the seat.
Take a look at what we found. It's hard to tell, but the relay (which was making the noise) was glued to the box. The wires are soldered in place to individual pins. Since the big green wire leads strainght to the fuel computer, it stands to reason that this is some sort of piggy back apparatus to add an 02 sensor (the big green wire) to a Euro spec car. Just a theory, but Rich Andrade (local wiring guru) offered it up and it seems to make sense. Any comments.
Incidentaly, the clicking becomes more persistent at idle and WOT. Fairly steady in between, with a brief pause in activity somewhere between 2500 and 3000 RPM. Also, it only seems to come in to play after a long time of running the car (ie HOT).

Memories!
Seems like just yesterday (after hearing this spastic clicking/arching noise coming from under my right a$$ cheek) I casually turn to Tim ask the question (so common amongst shark owners) "Do you have a fire extinguisher".....as I watch Tim's eyes become saucers. "No" says Tim....as my eyes begin to resemble his....."I think we better pull over."
Seriously, after pulling it apart and seeing the relay, it made sense, but there were a few moments…..

No..what makes sense is a straight through muffler, dual exhaust with limited restriction catalytic converters and a RRFPR to get the tuning juuuust right. Wires and extraneous computers don't make sense, I doubt they ever will.

Not sure if it's the same on an '85 (looks different), but the clicking on my '82 is simply the odometer that turns on the O2 sensor light at 60k mi to tell you it's time to change the sensor. There is a little button that you push in to reset the odo and you're good for another 60k.

I've never heard of that before, but I guess it makes sense. If you look at the pictures, it lokks like the importer rigged this up to get it to pass emissions. Incidentaly, I get horrible gas mileage as well. My last trip yeilded about 200 miles prior to idiot light (about 17 gals) and this was nearly all long straight freeway driving. Normally I wouldn't complain, except that my 81 was getting about 22-25 MPG before I tore her heart out and put in on display in my garage (pending rebuild). I've got the feeling these things are related.

I've only got an 84, and other than fuse panel I don't know the difference between 84-85 euro, but I know I have none of these shennanigans going on (I have an entirely different set of shennanigans). But then again, my federalization was obviously rather extensive (unfortunately). I just assumed Euros had O2 sensors regardless of whether there was a cat.
[edit] Though on reflection, that might explain why some things aren't bolted down right.

AFAIK Euros do not have 02 sensor as the would not be much point in using one when injection computer do not know what to do with signal. Besided leaded fuel we had here at the time would have ruined it fast anyway.

Liphardt is still around and makes stainless sport catalytic converters for 928. Only have mailing address for them.
Liphardt Ingenieuburo fur Motor- und Umwelttechnik
Max-Planck-Strasse 36
D-61381
Friedrichsdorf
Germany
They might be able to help what box and relay does.
Like Rich A., I suspect it's aftermarket mixture control device that uses O2 sensor. There are tax incentives in Germany to make older cars cleaner and some companies like Liphardt offer parts for 928 to drop emissions to lower level resulting smaller yearly road tax. AFAIK unleaded fuel has been around in Germany from mid eighties forward allowing use of catalytic converters. Porsche started offering them new in '86 928 S with 32V engine for German, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden. Still most cars were without cats during next few years creating market for aftermarket solutions.

In my heart of hearts, I'd like to have my federalised exhaust removed and replaced with a much more complimentary system. I'd still like to have catalytic converters, but I suspect this computer thing is killing my fuel economy. I wonder who can check it out. Rich A is semi-local, but there has got to be someone who knows what the hell this thing is around here somewhere. Maybe I'll just write to Liphardt, time to bust out that creaky German I've been paying so much to learn.

And he speaks the Queens English to boot. Hmmm, probably a better choice. Although I may get some extra credit in class for extracurricular German usage.
Here's some snaps of the current exhaust system, anyone recognize this? Be honest, how bad is it? I'm looking for reasons why my fuel economy sucks so bad. As tax season is upon us, I'm looking for things I can write off as well (he he).
