Default AFM not MAF Question (revised)

To remove the AFM, do I need to remove the top of the spider? Also, what should I do while i'm in there. I want this car running 100% if possible for a long trip that might be it it's near future.

TIA

Anyone have any ideas why there is a strong smell of gas? No gas or vaccuum leaks. Idles fine, but from take off if you press down instead pressing slowly to take off it seems to dump too much gas.

Ron.........the 1980-84 cars use an Air Flow Meter 928 606 121 02. Perhaps you can swap with another car to verify symptoms.
