Prssure tested coolant system yesterday and found leak. It is in the part of the thermostat housing that meets the block on the driver side apparently the gasket is bad. Does anyone know how to get at it? Thanks in advance.

Hi Michael,

Funny you should mention that... I just logged on to post a question about a coolant leak and found this thread. I, too, have the same leak. Mine is seeping very slowly past the joint where the thermostat housing meets the block (directly below the thermostat). From what I can tell, there should be an o-ring in that joint and then gaskets at each end where the coolant flows to each side of the V. I am not sure what to expect upon removal. My questions revolves around what other 'while I am in there' things do I need (if any) before I order parts. I have also heard that the 4 bolts can be nasty to remove and are prone to breaking. Are there any tips about removing these?

Just wondered if your air con still working? I developed a coolant leak that i couldn't trace - 2 pints in 30 miles. Turns out aircon oil? was leaking from a split seal behind the bulkhead and dripped onto coolant pipes to the heater causing them to perish. Coolant was tracking along the hoses and despite coolant dripping from drivers side (US car) the leak was from passenger side! Easy fix, but a pressure test is highly recommended to be 100% your leak is where you think!

Greg,
I have the same questions about what else should be done "while i am in there". It looks like the intake and definitely the oil filler neck need to come out to make accessible. I am also wondering if the bolts can be punched to loosen like those on the water pump. Looks like i have to add to my order again th get the gasket for the oil filler neck, intake gaskets, along with new o-rings for the thermo housing. Is it a real pain in the **** to remove the intake manifold? All responses are welcome.

Michael,

Try the advanced search on this forum and enter 'thermostat housing'. The reults will show a thread called "thermostat housing trouble" or something to that effect. There is some good info there. On your car, I don't know if you have to remove the oil filler etc. Apparently on the S4, it can come out without removing that. A fuel line has to be separated though. Just have to watch those bolts, especially that back one I guess. I imagine that it would be a good time to do the hoses that are there. Other than that, I can't think of any other 'while you are at its'. Time to call the big 3...

Michael,

Also, double check to see if the intake actually has to come off - I think that on the S4 it doesn't. It would simplify everything if it didn't have to come off. I have to do more research.

Good luck,

Greg

Greg,
I was hoping someone would say that. I have been studying the car and the manuals and from what the manuals show and part nos. and whatnot they look like the same setup to me. I really did not want to take off the manifold on this job, maybe next job but not this one.
