hello, iv been reading the forums but this is my first post. i currently have a 1989 928 s4 automatic. i currently need a new transmission. i was wondering if it is possible to install a different automatic transmission( instead of the benz one) maybe even something with tiptronics or 6speed?. I would love to install a manual tranny but that is to costly for me unless its possible to do it for under 7gs including labor.
any input is welcome thanks again.

Um,
If you are willing to spend 7k for a trans setup, why not get a rebuilt unit ? 2k
Labor 2k
Buy a SC kit for 3k and you won't have to shift as much....
You would have just spent 7k...

i said 7gs cuz i didnt know how much labor would cost to install. and if i get a rebuilt tranny it would be the same benz one. i wanted to switch to hopefully a tiptronic auto, if i couldnt put a manual for under 7.

I don't think you can convert to a manual for under $7k....unless you do all the work yourself. However you could have your tranny rebuilt using hardened AMG internals good for 1000hp+ for around the same price range you mentioned... Other rennlisters have this AMG transmission (mercedes 722.3) and have had very good results with it!

The MB internals were used in a case specific to the 928. The CLK box would not work.
As cool it would be to have a Tiptronic-style shift option, the basic premise of the 928 is that there is an abundance of torque and a trans that will handle it. The original trans in your '89 is more than capable of handling any normal-use duty that you can dish out. Put a rebuilt unit in there, change the fluid regularly, and you should get a lot of years and miles of service from it.
