If it is lifters I'd use some Marvel Mystery Oil. I was having the same symptons as you are experiencing on my '80 and it went away after an old timer told me to try the stuff.

goliver,
I did use this, just mis-wrote the real name of it...."Marvel" Mystery Oil not "Magical". Either way, didn't clear up the problem. Maybe I needed to use more of it? Whats that stuff do anyway?

2ndof2,

Supposed to act like a detergent and clean all of the orifices out real good. Apparently with dino oil you can get quite a bit of gum/varnish. In any event I poured two large bottles of it in right before an oil change and ran the beejeezus out of the car for 500 miles and then changed the oil and the problem disappeared for the most part. It made me nervous to dilute the oil so much but it didn't hurt anything as far as I can tell. I drove the car for another 100K+ after that with no ill effects. If the car sat for a few days in cold temps., say at or below 40 degrees farenheit, it would just barely tick out of one lifter for about 20 seconds.

Hope you get her fixed.

Cheers,

Geoff,
Although I've tried this stuff before, I didn't use a whole lot of it. As for the Prestone stuff, apparently that can't be run in the motor for too long (5 minutes is good) and it does clean it up a bit, however, maybe having something in there longer like this MMO may be the cheap way to quiet her down. Its VERY loud at times and other times she just purrrrs. We'll see what happens and I'll re-post. Thanks to all.

What ever additive you use, remember the oil capacity is almost twice as large as most engines so a normal application may not achieve the best results. Same applies to fuel additives.

Geoff,
Two bottles eh? How bad was the car clicking and did it seem to be just one lifter or valve or did it sound like many of them? Mine just sounds like one. I only used one bottle the first time round. Will try 2-3 and see. Also, does the stuff come in different size bottles by chance? Dennis makes a good point I hadn't considered in terms of how much to use.

2ndof2,

I used two 32oz. bottles. I drained some out of the sump before I put the MMO in. It seemed like just one or maybe two lifters on my car. in the back of the head on the driver's side.

I currently have all my lifters out. Is the a good way to clean them. I see no way to take them apart or to get the oil out and a cleaner in.

Part of the process of cleaning the passages with these additives is to run the car hard for a period. It's got to operate at temp and under load for a reasonable time to have a chance to do the work. My 78 clickity clacked quite a bit at first. Couple quarts of Rislone with 2 batches of oil, 1000 miles of romping on the highways and local twisties, all quiet. A long hose with one end in your ear and the other on the cam tower while it's clacking should confirm lifters. I'd try applying the detergent route in vigorous fashion before I tore into the cam towers. Make sure your t-belt is tensioned before hanging around the rev limit.

I concur with Mike. Italian tuneup with the detergent can do wonders. The old timer that suggested the MMO also suggested running disel in the sump for about five minutes. I DIDN'T try that one so can neither confirm or deny its effectiveness.

Sean,

If you have them out anyway why not put new ones in?

Goliver, at $90 a pop and 16 lifters it starts to get expensive. Also, I have not found a definitive method for testing so I would have to replace all. I think I will try some of this MMO once the engine is back together. Also, some mentioned the gasket on the oil pickup tube, I will replace this also.

Sean,

Ouch. I didn't realize they were so expensive. I'd do the MMO thing and hope for the best.

You guys have any preference between MMO vs. Rislone? Is one better than the other for any reason? Sounds like it takes more Rislone than MMO to do the job. I've tried both but only 1 bottle of MMO or Rislone in each case with some results but obviously not enough since I keep coming back to the same problem. Only tried the stuff once in each case. Also sounds like going with the Rislone you don't necessarily want to leave it in for too long...only 500-1000 miles or so?
