Default To chip or not to chip

That is the question. Anyone here with an S4 or GT chipped there car? The car seems plenty fast enough, but the more I read, the more I'd love to unleash the 'stock' potential of this car. Using 93 Octane all the time, it's a shame that the car is not doing what it's capable of doing. Is this all marketing crap or is this for real? I'm assuming that all the other components of the drive train etc. could easily handle the increase in hsp and tq? Is it really worth the money...that's the question.

Top of the morning...

And a fine morning it is ....
The GT LH and EZX already have a 'hotter than' S4 chip set installed AFAIK.
I acquired the brains from a '91 GT as spares, and after a discussion with John Speake, installed the more aggressively curved EZK into my '88 S4 auto: No dyno, but it seems to have more snap. Similarly, the GT LH apparently has a more aggressive metering map - and a slightly higher idle: due to the latter, this unit was not yet tried ( potential 'creep' with an auto), but I will do so, for city driving is not a priority: an elevated idle may not be an issue.

Anyway, I'm only guessing, but while the commercially offered chip sets may perk-up a S4, they may have little to offer a GT. If they do offer a boost, it's not in the league to be concerned about drivetrain failures. For a real boost, go SC .

Yes, certainly not interested in anything like SC'ing, but how can I tell which setup my car has. Engine code, door code? I've heard that same that chips may indeed help an S4, but not GT or GTS. I'd bug David or Jeannie, but since they're in the process of facelifting my interior...they don't need to be bothered by me. I'm interested in attending Dyno Days, which hopefully will happen; and then we'll see what I'm actually producing as the car is.

Best wishes

You can unclip the rug cover in the passenger side footwell, and by incurring only mild neck sprain, read the '928. xxx ....' code on the EZK. Next to impossible to read the LH without removal; however, if the EZK checks as 928 618 124 22 - it is likely that the unique to '91 GT LH 928 618 123 26 is also there ( data found in John's FAQ links).

Hi Roland,

>I'd bug David or Jeannie, but since they're in the process of facelifting my interior..

You can "bug" us now, your new carpet and seat leather is done, see below :-)

BTW, save your money, chips are a "no-go" on your 91.

SWEET...now come on Sunshine...warm that damn road. Anyone got a flatbed, salt truck, snow plow, or any other device I can use to rescue my snowed in car? Will debut the new interior (carpet and two new front reupholstering) in Kershaw this weekend at Carolinas Motorsports Park for the DE hosted by the Carolinas Region PCA. Hoping for dry fast weather, but it's not looking too promissing...more rain it looks like.

David and Jeannie have worked their fingers to the bone, so many KUDO's to them...now just to get mother nature to cooperate...that's the issue.

Best wishes,

Roland

Nice job David the interior looks GREAT ! Roland for the GT exhaust improvements and an adjustable pressure fuel regulator will do FAR MORE than any set of chips ....Ron G here is getting 317 HP at the rear wheels 89 GT !! with stock chips.

Adam,

>how much for the seat kits?

$1125 for both front seats. BTW, this newer Germany Leather is about twice as thick and tougher than the original... and BUTTERY Soft!!

> is it a DIY deal?

Yes, IF you have a little working knowledge of how seats are put together and have a pair Hog Ring Pliers. Give yourself a weekend the first time you do it.
Oh, Jeannie just reminded me, a "helper" is also very handy:-)

Chaz,

>Dave that interior really looks nice. What steering wheel?

Momo, I think it is a Club 3. Maybe Roland can refresh my memory.

Jim,

>Nice job David the interior looks GREAT !

THANKS!

Geoff,

Thanks!

Here is another photo showing just the carpet completed on the passenger side. If you look across the top of the armrest/console you can see the drivers side is still bare ..

Hey Dave (or Jim): Do you guys sell those white, glow in the dark circles for the door handles? Oh yeah, any progress on the aluminum billet handles as well? New supplier?
