Default wow, funy story...

Pulled into my driveway, got out to open the garage door, heard a weird clacking sound from the engine. Popped the hood, looked down, saw a belt flapping loose off its pulley. Checked the manuals, its for air conditioning compressor. But, as I was looking down, I saw this other pulley wheel naked of its belt, and realized the belt-driven fan was not being driven. Belt's just gone! So new belts on way! My temp guage was normal, maybe because my commute is only about 10-15 minutes on the interstate, not that I want to do that again.

Sheesh - maybe it's time to check ALL your belts (if you know what I mean)

Flint on the highway the belt driven fan does nothing. You might want to check the air injection pump the pulley where you tension the fan belt. Often it seizes melts the belt in two and as it falls off may take out other belts. You may need a rebuilt air injection/smog pump we have them.

Any way to tell if its seized now that the belt is gone? I would assume that I wouldn't be able to turn it by hand normally.

Ooor, maybe a delete is in order? This is a Euro...

Being a Euro it may not have a pump just the pulley but yes you can turn the smog pump by hand they should not turn very hard. By the way that Euro pulley last I looked was like $742 from Porsche !

Definitely a whole smog pump, and definitely does not turn. I'd consider bypassing it with the much vaunted mod, but I still have a cat, so I assume its still necessary.

It would seem to be seized and that explains where that belt went and why it came off.

If your state requires emmission inspection and you have to keep the cat, go for a complete make-over-new exhaust with a high flow cat from autosound without the air tube. My 85s has an Avenger II exhaust with a high flow cats that Tom C. set-up for me. I have an electric fan set-up recommended by Dave at 928 Specialists. Runs like a bat-out-of-hell, and engine stays cool. Here's question for the board, since the Euro's didn't have a cat, and the O2 sensor is an add on, will a high flow cat still pass inspection without the O2 sensor, if so then "restore" the engine to its original setting. Thanks Ed M
If you need pictures of the set-up, I can send them.
