I was riding my bicycle in 1978. Grosse Ile, Michigan...an island community about 20 miles south of Detroit. One of my friends from school lived one street over, I was bored and decided to see what he was up to. His dad was a "sportscaster" for one of the television stations in Detroit; as I pulled into his driveway, I noted a brand new silver car parked there: a 1978 Porsche 928.

I about fell of my bike-

I don't know what it is about the 928's design that strikes me so much; this car, the '82-'86 Toyota Supra's, and the Ferrari 308 just leave me lying on the ground each time. As I stood there, bike between legs, surveying the cars fantastic curves and new smell [I'm one of the few people who has actually smelled a NEW 928 I think-!], I told myself that I'd own one someday...no matter what.

FORWARD to 1999. Normy's been through puberty (!). And I've passed my 727 type rating check ride...and I want a toy. An ******* in North Florida is selling his "Euro" 928, and I bite [bad idea]. It winds up in my driveway; My brother, who lives with me/fist-fights with me spends an hour playing with my new stereo. He pronounces it "muddy", but I'm not surprised- the stereo is a piece of digestive waste and I know it but apparently he doesn't. I don't care- the stereo gets in the way of me hearing my glorious open exhaust anyway! To the downtown Orlando area I sojourn that night in my new toy, the NASCAR soundtrack following me closely. Yes I did note the stares of the locals:

"That's not supposed to sound like that!" -One of the charming things of owning a 928!

Anyway, I arrive at the local downtown dance club. I hang out, buy my requisite single beer, and chat away. Damn. She's 20 and wants to talk. And when I offer a ride in my new Porsche...for once she buys it and says "yes"~

-I know the downtown area. Thornton Park is full of live oaks and not full of street lights. I park, and well... My first night of Porsche ownership I kinda sorta got somewhat naked in the car.

The other great story involves my modeling work. I haven't done this in a few years, but through a colleague, I was introduced to a pornographer who decided that my slender [6'1" and 145 pounds] frame would be good for some photography...without clothes. So I went for it....

[I don't recommend this; they hound you and you'll look back on it embarrassed as you age]

I went there, and IMMEDIATELY they noticed my 928. Instantly, I heard this "Hey man...you don't mind we pose you with the car?" I told them to go ahead, and two meatballs picked me up like I was a feather and, placing a black cloth beneath me...lowered me naked on the 18 pound aluminum hood of my car. That hood is stronger than it looks...

THOSE are my Porsche stories-

N!

The 928 always was a fascinating car for me, and the journey to owning one probably wasn't as long as others, but it should have been shorter.

I first saw a 928 in a book that was given to me by my uncle for my 6th birthday. At the time my uncle had a 260Z that had been turbo charged which was an unusual sight considering the car scene in the early 80s over in Perth, Australia.

Fast forward 20+ years and I own the very car that captivated me in my early years. Its even the same colour as the picture in my book. I stumbled across my 1982 928S after contemplating purchasing a 928 (this happened a few times since I could drive) seriously for a year. This time I had even done my research.

This car I stumbled across wasn't perfect, but it was mechanically healthy, had a full documented service history from new, and for its age had done relatively little kilometres (167000k). I enthusiastically saw potential Yet I wasn't too sure until my Toyota MR2 started to die dramatically over a few days. So I took it as a sign and snapped up the 928S.

The lines of the car are fabulous. Its hard for many to realise if they never have given the car a hard look. There is so much shape to the car its a work of art. I never was an immediate fan of the fat bubble rear but I acquired the taste for such.

Now the project is to make the car immaculate as all super cars deserve. After fixing a few things (just fitted new diff mounts 10 minutes ago!) I'll be starting an enthusiastic restoration.
