Curt tells me the current tags are good until the end of Feb. I am not going to make that time line. SO do go for it and hope I don't get stopped. Mind you I am not going to be getting to crazy. Well, maybe a little! I was considering taking the plates and registration from my 81' and putting those on the 84', but I would probably get in more trouble for that than if I were driving with tags that expired a few days ago.
CW04MANN, I'll take you up on your offer for a place to crash. I'll pm you when I know for sure when I'm going to go. I am planning on taking U.S. 40 west until I get to NV and then I'll get on 95 and blast home the rest of the way to Carson City.

Can't you simply have the COD express mailed to you, title & tag the car in Nv as a paper exercise only - and fly out for a pick-up with fresh plates: I've done that here ( albeit a different jurisdiction, maybe different rules) - and been granted a 30 day period of grace to have the local MVI done when I returned.

Goliver: My only contact with Louie was via the phone from the scales. The situation was the cop was letting me go with the stipuplation that it was up to Louie whether I was going to have to pay for a tow home from the dump. I don't really think the law in any way implicates a third party, apparently the cop just wanted to make sure nothing happens w/o Louie's knowledge; since the cop knew the guard knew, the cop was covering his rear. None of this was too dramatic, til the young guy running the scales nearly choked when I told him I had to call Louie, and would he put me through on the phone -- like some smuck truck driver would have any reason to bother this guy, suddenly the scales guy was really interested in what I would be doing on the phone. Louie was quite low key and a little puzzled himself. He merely asked a couple questions trying to figure why I was calling him and if I was some "operator" or something and when he was satisfied I was nobody, he said "You don't have any money, right?" coming to the same conclusion as the cop 3 hours earlier and that I should go on home and have a good day. I knew the town, the dump, the local car dismantler and who knows what else were connected, but I didn't know Louie ran everything. It was right out of the Godfather but w/o the nice locations, etc.

I brought mine home from Colorado to California. Had the title fedexed over, then went to the DMV to 'negotiate'. Some interesting stuff happened, not the least of which was the DMV babe saw a single exec with a Porsche. Sone there were three of them trying to 'help'. Anyway, I ended up with a bright red temporary use permit to stick in the rear window. Oh yeah, I'm goona put a big red pull-me-over flag in the back window all right. So it went into the folder in the car with all thge other paperwork during the ride home. the Colorado plates and windshield sticker were two years out of date, but never got a second look the whole ride. I figured that I could put the sticker in the window for a few miles if forced to. The car is enough of an eye catcher as it is, without anything like a temp op permit or some wierd out-of-state imitation dealer sticker on it.
Get the paperwork sent over to you and take it to your DMV and explain the situation. Their big concern is to gather in your money. Know that and you'll be able to negotiate what you need while you have that check still sitting on the counter between you. Once it's over to the dark side, your ability to negotiate goes down a lot.
Your insurance co may insist that the car has some sort of registration before they will cover it. Many states have mandatory insurance laws, so carry a copy of your current policy no with you just in case you get stopped. Drive like a civilized luxury car owner and never get a second look. Blast through smallville at 20 over the limit and watch out! Use you head and you'll be fine.
Travel safe, have fun, enjoy the ride!

I must agree with Dr. Bob about driving demeanor while in a neighboring state.
I usually reserve my 'spririted' driving for outside the city limits and am all over the brakes as I approach a small town. They need my money too much to offer it to them, and out of state plates are an invitation to them to grab some of it.

Shane why am I not surprised that you would say ship it ! you are on an island in the Aleutians about all you see are ships and pickup trucks. Just the thought of having a paved road to drive on must seem pretty foreign at this point in time. Hang in there Winter is only 9 months long.....

Drive it (easy to say)!
I would have it shipped. I can't see myself driving 3000 miles in a car that I have never driven before. Sure, I also come from an island that is 18 by 6 miles :-). Then again, if you got tools and basic car knowledge (cell phone, car charger and battery boost just in case) you should be fine. Just remember to take a spare fuel pump relay (and something to bypass it just in case), fire ext, fix-a-flat, etc. Also post the route you are planning to take. If you going through Birmingham let me know, I'll shoot you my cell. I am sure other renn members will do that as well (if you still planning on driving 3000 miles).
I am buying a 928 tomorrow but it's only 160 miles drive.

OK. I am going to go for it with the current plates and tags that are on the car. Like I said before, I think I would have more trouble with plates from another vehicle than driving with tags that are a few days expired. At most it would be a fix it ticket. I am going to fly out on the 26th of Feb. The flight that I was looking at doesn't arrive until Sun at 10:30 a.m. I am still checking for earlier flight times. There is not much to choose from at this late date. I'll probably hang around until early monday morning before I get on the road. Dave Mann has extended an invitation to stop over at his place and if I left on Sun I would get to his place at about midnight! Not cool. So I'll take off early Monday and arrive in the afternoon sometime. When I leave Dave's place I plan on staying on 40 W until I get to NV and then go up 95 the rest of the way home. This is going to be fun! I'll take a bunch of pics along the way and post them when I get home. Thanks for all the input to help me make up my mind about driving. Actually I pretty much had my mind made up from the start. I just needed a nudge to get me going!

I have purchased 2 cars on E-bay and flown in /drove home both times. It has been an adeture for me and the wife both times. Last time was just a few weeks ago. We flew into Newark on the Friday knowing that the east coast was going to get hit with snow on Fridat night or Saturdat morning. We could not stop until we got far enough south to be safe from being snowed in when we woke up.
This kind of trip makes lie interesting !!!! Go 4 it !!!
