Default Found a piece in my gearbox...?

When changing all fluids on my "new" GT, we found a a piece of steel stuck to the drain plug of the gearbox. It's a thin about 1.5" long piec of steel plate...
Does anyone know what that could be?
Should I be concerned?
Gearbox shifts great, no problems noticed. Fluid looked normal, no other parts or particles found.

That WAS the reverse lochout spring which is bolted to the top cover and resists the shifting by accident from 1st to reverse. Sometimes it drops into the gears and mucks things up but if your box shifted ok just run it as is BUT be a bit careful with the reverse.

Is there only one of these for the reverse lockout? It still seems to work, since I can't go from 1st to reverse. Is this a common issue or rather rare?

Found the same piece on the drain plug of my '89 GT when I first bought it as well. Scared me to death. It's the spring for the gear lock. Page 34-220 Voulme II Transmission. I still have reverse lockout as well. Not to worry.

Great, that looks just like it. What does it do or better what did it do before it broke?

Sab,
It could also be a long forgotten can opener from a tin of sardines: the factory mechanics favoured them for lunch with a pilsner or two - did you gear oil have a fishy smell??
