I spoke with DR about the lifters, and it's his experience that most people just re-use their old lifters. I will closely examine each one for wear or other oddities and replace if necessary. 32 of these things would be costly to replace if it's not necessary. DR said they might be noisy if there's a problem, but that it's pretty rare.

The cam chains are being replaced. The chain tensioners will be replaced only to the extent necessary, if at all.

Hi Dave,

I don't know that replacing the Chain Tensioner is necessary and only you can make that call, BUT I would definitely replace the "Check Valve" for the Chain Tensioners. It is not commonly know that one of the hollow bolts (banjo bolts) that retain the oil pipeline from the head to the chain tensioner has a check valve built in to it (85-86 only, 87-up uses a different system). When this valve gets sticky or stuck open this is where a lot of cam chain noise on startup and when cold comes from.

Part # is 928.105.081.01 and costs about $20 each.

Don't know if this would be overkill or not. But what about magnafluxing the cam that operated the bent valves to check and make sure that there isn't a surprise waiting to happen after assembly? It would really stink to bust a cam after you button her all up. Been reading about broken cams around here and just got me to thinking. Usually the breakage is traced to a major shunt of the front of the car.

How many bent valve/post timing belt failure engines are there out there that used the same cams with no problems? Am I just being a worry wort?

In aviation, if you ground strike a prop the whole engine is torn down and checked for "issues."

I wouldn't hesitate to use the lifters as long as you keep them in the bores they came out of and weren't causing issue before you should be fine.

Regards,

Regards,
The lifters are going into a completely different set of heads. I guess I get to be a guinea pig on this one.

Big Dave, does your wife know you're using the washing machine to clean those parts? Do you use a liquid or powder? Spring time fresh?
Your pictures are an awsome reference to have for the future. Thanks for posting them.

She was out for the evening and walked in the door wondering what the hell that smell was. I was using Gunk and mineral spirits in the house, but down in the basement where the utility tub is. The furnace is down there, so the stench kinda went through the house.

One of our kids is now missing an old Spiderman toothbrush. I'm not telling.

Dave are you a religious man? I hope you went ot church after seeing only bent 2 or 3 valves on the passenger side.

Keep us updated on what else you find

Dave, My '88 supposedly had cam belt failure with no damage before I bought it. I had intermittent lifter noise and using a stethescope narrowed it down to 4 valves making the noise. I pulled the cams and found those lifters soft to the touch and nearby ones hard. Replaced those 4 and no more noise.
Maybe piston to valve contact causes internal lifter check valve failure?
I would not re-use "soft" lifters.

JM.928 on the lifters; I have successfully reused lifters on a few motors (non-928), but they should be matted to the same cam lobe.

If you didn't keep track of where they came out of, make sure you used some good cam break-in grease to help them mate to their new surfaces.

If you’re a religious person, you may want to say a few prayers just before you restart it, after it has run for a few minutes and than give thanks after a few days of good running (should everything go right).
