I had the same problem and it was the rear side marker lights. The one on the passenger side was oh so much fun due to the gas tank.

I "think"..the bulb check controller is at the right side of the passenger side storage shelf under the dash/glove box. It has enough harness slack to be easily removed for inspection. It is black, about 2.5" square in shape, and about 3/4" thick.
Regards...

You know...on my 86.5, I had a persistent "Stop Lamp" warning light in the dash the would NOT go away...and after all prudent bulb checks...socket cleanings, etc, etc,...I was resigned to the "fact" that the bulb check -"controller" unit was the culprit, and ready to fork out the $216 for a new one, to rectify this problem. One last search of the archives of this board, yielded a thread that cured this issue, by dissassembling the control unit, and a thorough scouring of the contacts with a fine brass wire brush, the size of a toothbrush....Now all is good. The "Stop Light" warning light comes on as expected, on startup, but immediately, and consistently goes away with one touch of the brake pedal.
Thanks again to all you fellows that put this money saving information the the board for the community to benefit from...Looks like I've reached the point that I better pony up the cash and become a full fledged member of this great board. This info alone...saved me more than the cost of a "lifetime" membership, (at my age)...(48 and climbing)...
Thanks, and regards to all.

Unhappy

Don't forget...
When you remove the Lamp Control Unit -LCU- that it is possible to release the wires, AND I DO MEAN ALL OF THEM from the cap in one fell swoop.
Something new with Pattycakes!
This only happens when in reverse with the brakes applied:
Right front running light comes on, albiet, on the dim side.
Broken insulation/crossed wire, no doubt...
Sheesh, more spark chasing.

The "Tail Light" warning and the "Brake Light" warning are very different.

The normal action for the "Brake Light" warning is for the warning to be on after the engine is cranked until the brake pedal is pressed. If the bulbs are good, the warning then goes off. The only bulbs that affect this warning are the brake lights in the tail lamp housing and the CHMSL (Center High Mounted Stop Lamp).

The "Tail Lamp" warning can be affected by the tail lamps, side marker lamps and license plate lamps. This warning may come on at any time after the parking lamps (or head lamps) are turned on.

The Bulb Check Unit is located between the glove box and firewall on most cars. It is different from the Central Warning Computer, which is located in the dead pedal in most cars.
I did a search for tail lights, as my drivers side tail lights were out. I pulled the bulb check unit and swapped it with the one from my 86. Tail lights fixed.

One note of difference was that the bulb check unit on my cars are bolted to the map tray. Much easier to get to and replace, even for a one armed bandit.

Thanks Wally and rennlist!
