Default cam removal tool

after sleeping on it last nite, I'm gonna just go ahead and remove the heads/cams on the 82 and swap them regardless, I'll feel better and the car will have a new lease on life.. that being said
I'd like to do it with the engine in the car, I know the area is tight but I'm small and really don't want to pull the motor
I was looking at 928motorsports cam removal tool
http://www.928motorsports.com/parts/camtool.html
no offense intended, but, couldn't I just use the long 6mm allen I already have?
what is the length needed to reach the bolts, yet clear the inner fender?
again, no offense intended but I'd rather not pay for something I already have

Hi Rixter,

The length of the Factory Cam tool 9133/1 (6mm allen socket) is 2.5" from end to end , there is a picture of it on our website in the Tools section. In the past I have cut off longer/cheaper versions and used them.

Worth it in my opinion. I have a similar one.....Snap-on I believe. I had to cut it to the correct length. ( i kept the end I cut off, and use it too) It is usefull for both the inside and outside bolts. A slim ratchet is also helpful. You can make your own of course, using 6mm allen glued into a 6mm socket. I don't know the correct length off-hand. Taking off the cam towers with engine in car sucks. Not difficult, but frustrating. I've done it 3 times now.

THe biggest PITA bolt will be the one next to the brake booster. I cut a L shaped wrench down to get access to it. The Passenger side lower bolts were easy to access from the bottom. Driver side lower bolts can be accessed from the bottom side, but are little more difficult, unless you have very small arms/hands. When removing the cam towers be careful to remove them slowly. The lifters will want to fall out and roll around on the floor. Rock the cam housing back towards you slowly and watch them. They need to stay in the same order as they came out in. Remember to disconnect the battery before starting.

battery was removed before it went on stands, I know about the cams and lifters
and anyone who knows me can attest that I'm small enough to reach dang near anything (you should see my process for removing the dash)
I sent the word out to the local shark owners, and for the price of some brews and pizza, I'm sure I'll have a few extra hands around for help
it'll also give them the chance to pick thru the donors for stuff they may need
