Default Function of tank venting valve?

Guys,
What is the exact function of the tank venting valve?
What happens if it is not energized or the connector at the valve disconnected

OK I am sure you will get an educated answer soon but my guess would be the tank could collapse??

James,
I don't think so, the valve is connected to the choarcoal canister and is controlled by the LH-ECU. What happens if I remove the valve and connect the two hoses?
