Default Transmission Synchros Question

Is it possible to tell the quality of the synchros in a transmission by simply opening the top and having a look? I purchased a used transmission and was told it was from a perfectly good 928 that wrecked. Now that the old tranny is out of the car and I'm getting ready to put in the new one in I am asking myself if I should spend the $$$ to get it all new synchros/rebuild or trust the person I bought it from (out of rennlist classified) . Any advice on looking at synchros to grade their quality would be appreciated. I'd really rather not change them out if possible, but at the same time I don't want to have to fix the tranny again for a while.

thanks all

yes to some extent you can. in my case the 1st and 2nd were shot. wear marks were visible, and the 2nd gear ring was loose. try to press it down with a screwdriver.

a good ring should have an even, but somewhat granular grey color. no shiny ring as in my case.
