Default Looking for a 928 GT

Hi,
I hope it's OK to post this here.

I'm looking for a pristine, low mileage 91 or later 928GT or GTS (manual trans).

I would also be interested in comments on market prices for late model 928's.

Thanks

A little more info would help. Where have you looked? What color, How far will you travel? From where? And of course what price range? Ebay has a lot of drawbacks, namely buying sight unseen in most cases. The likelyhood of a particular shark being close to you is very low. So then you need a PPI, got somebody in your location to do same?

autotrader.com
cars.com
google, not many dealers (Pcar or otherwise) bother with these, but they do show up from time to time.

HTH, welcome to the 12 step meetings we have here for shark addicts.

eBay has made me doubly cautious after getting frustrated there. Buying from an honest Rennlister is a good idea but, depending on how much a person has put into the car, you may pay premium...and end up with a car in great shape. and relatively reliable. Or, as everywhere, there are a few shysters out there and you may end up buying someone else's hung looming expense that they know about but you don't tell you (eBay is famous for this). Getting a pre purchase inspection (PPI) on an eBay sale can be a pain (beware non-refundable deposits, travel costs to see a car that was advertised as "pristine" but in reality is a POS). But with an individual lister this usually is not a problem (unless it's the rumored guy in Spokane who has a GTS for sale with an apparent bad cylinder that he doesnt' want to be found out).

Probably the best "potential" deals are the hardest to come by. People who list in newspapers across the country and are not enthusiasts but who fainted at the "last straw" repair quote from their local Porsche dealer. The car will likely have something wrong it but you (if you do your own repairs) may be able to fix it cheaply (you can't count your labor). Nevertheless, it may need new hoses ($400-$500 plus your labor); New T-Belt/water pump job (same amount of money for parts plus your labor or about $1,200 and up at a repair shop), maybe new synchros, etc, etc.

Enthusiasts will probably have replaced the belts, rubber stuff, gas pump, steering rack, brains, fixed the cruise, etc, etc.....making the deal the best overall. But there are too many factors in a purchase/sale for it to be simple. However, in my mind, if you buy without a PPI, prepare for the worst or have a good record each time you go to Vegas and carry a rabbit's foot for pure luck.

Knowing the true motive for a sale is important and not always easy to find out. Often, it's one of the car just being "too expensive" to continue to maintain. Getting married and needs the money, baby won't fit well in 928, or a divorce.....or the state taking the driver's license away from the old geezer who bought it new...but he still may want $25K for an 85S. However, for most people, 928's are their 2nd. car...not the primary car. Otherwise, they'd be within walking distance of work as their backup plan. Or they park their "baby" for the winter and drive other less interesting cars. A few use 928s as daily drivers...those cars may be good bets. Cars that have been sitting a long time, even if low milers, come with automatic expenses related to sitting.

I just bought another daily driver (non 928) but I'm still saving and looking for my second 928. I don't need it though. Just love them. Love's hard to say no to....but marrying and buying a 928 have their similarities (ALL the interesting ones look good on the outside)...KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN and explore carefully all the things your new partner doesn't want you to know. With divorce rates approaching 50% I wonder what the 928-changeout rate is for 928 owners?

Harvey
BTW, if you're looking for a wife and you want a PNI (pre-nuptual inspection), I know a guy who lives South of Seattle who's your man. He'd probably travel for the opportunity to help you...in one of his 928s! Just tell him her favorite color since he may have that color car.

Hi all

Thanks for the replies.

Price: I have had an 87 S4 and a 91GT (which I wish I had kept), and have some sense of 928 prices as of 3 years ago. There is a 94 GTS on the web for ~ $60K and to me, this is overpriced.

Colors: I like dark blue, charcoal other darker colors; colors that I am not looking for are red, white (no offense to anyone with different taste).

Location: Saint Louis area, but willing to go a distance for the right car.

Please keep me in mind of you run across something.

This guy is close to you and can help you find what you are looking for. And ignore all the following posts saying he overcharges. You mentioned a pristine car. He has them. Good Luck.

dmcentee ,

I am getting my 1993 928 GTS 5-speed back to sell again (sold it last summmer). The guy I sold the car to is a customer of mine and a very wealthy business owner with LOTS of cars who doesn't have the time or interest to sell the car himself. Miles are still under 30k, he said the car is just too nice to drive so he bought a 2005 Saleen Mustang and a 2005 Vette!

You can see pics of the car here: 1993 928 GTS Please note: the car will be sold with the original 17" C2s. He put about 200 miles on it.........

Send me a PM if you're interested.

It's to bad you didn't post this thread about a month ago. I buy and sell alot of 928's, mostly all of which have very low miles.

Recently, I decided that I was limiting my buying and selling to just GTS's. In other words, no pre-'93 cars.

I had the opportunity to purchase a '90 GT that was black on black with 51,000 miles for $15,900. It was a true 1 owner in absolute flawless condition with history. I would have gladly passed it on to you, but obviously didn't know you were looking.

If I come across anything that sounds like what your describing, I'll let you know...........free of charge.

By the way, if you don't mind sharing, what is your budget? It would help to know if I come across anything.

P.S. Here are some realistic prices for typical 5 speed cars per from a private party. You will pay a premium for a purchase from someone such as myself or a dealer such as Willhoit.

These prices are for a perfect car with 50,000 miles, for example:

'89 GT.......$20,000
'90 GT.......$22,000
'91 GT.......$24,000
'93 GTS.....$30,000
'94 GTS.....$34,000
'95 GTS.....$38,000

Todd, Where do you see GTSs for this kind of money? I know you and I really watch the market but I have not seen any GTSs lately for these $ unless they have a boat load more miles than 50k and have a bad history. I'd love to find another 95 GTS auto with 50k miles for $38k, I'd be all over it.

Chuck,

You don't see them that often as there aren't that many around total, but those are the prices I've seen on all of the cars I've listed.

There was a black/black '95 automatic with 53,000 miles that sold about 5 months ago for $35,000. A no side molding car with all books, records, everything! Where were you for that deal?

I'll let you know next the time I come across one.

I've also been selling off of Ebay thru other outlets with much better (bigger) results. The prices that Ebay brings are in the crapper lately!

I'll be in touch. What color '95 auto are you looking for?

Chuck: you should take back ownership of that car and not even consider passing it on to another person unless they meet the highest criteria of 928 ownership/obsession. They should have to pass a test of knowledge of bolt sizes, torque values, 928 history, and a mechanical skills test. "Sponge-worthy" a-la Seinfeld.
That thing is too nice, and life is too short.

Probably not looking seriously at buying one at that time or, the miles were too high.

There's not enough of these cars out there to be picky on the color.
