Question Approx Car Transport Costs? Coast to Coast?

I'm talking with someone about a car in New York...but it would have to be shipped all the way across the country to Washington State. Does anyone have any experience with approximately what it could cost to ship a car that distance? Companies that you might recommend? Cautions?

The reason this is important is that one has to take these costs into consideration when making the purchase. If you frontload the purchase price too much (shipping, complete T-belt job, new tires, etc. etc. etc., pretty soon you're over market value by quite a bit. I know what the other things can cost but have no idea on shipping costs.

Thank you,

Harvey

i've done it twice with high end carriers and once with a low end carrier. $1500 to $1600 for enclosed high end, $700 for open low end which resulted in body damage and a spun rod bearing (can we say joy ride?) $7000 total repair costs which the carrier refused to be responsible for.
needless to say, the extra $ is well worth the peace of mind. open carriers will often offload the cars and leave them in a storage facility for a day or two. a closed carrier loads it and doesn't unload it until it reaches the destination point.
also be sure to have the car on your insurance policy before it ships just in case. fortunately i did in the above case and was covered.

I am trying Dependable for the first time. https://www.dasautoshippers.com/ They offer an enclosed service from Pa to Ca for $1150. It is not door to door so you have to deliver it to a depot and do the same at pick up but it sounded good to me. Ask me again in a few weeks and I may have a different opinion.

Companies that you might recommend? Cautions?
I'd recommend Concours (from my experience). A search on this list will probably return positive experiences with them.
A caution is "Avoid the middleman". If you do a Google search for "auto transport" it's likely that more than 50% of the results are brokers. Their sites make it appear that they are the primary shippers....."all of our trucks are state of the art...." things like that. These guys are nothing more than travel agents for your car. They will simply take your order, mark it up & place it with the carrier through a nationwide list. Once they've taken your money & placed the order to ship, they are out of the picture.....the relationship is then between you & the actual transport operator (where it should have been in the first place). Since most brokers don't even commit to a timeline or carry any liability covering your car, they offer absolutely nothing to the consumer. Whomever you choose, make sure that you are dealing with the primary shipper...the actual owner of the trucks. That should be your first question when you speak with them.
