Default quick question on hatch release wiring

so im ripping apart the nasty (and thats an understatement) interior on my 82'. as i battle the arachnids who have taken residence , deal with the rigged flathead screws someone thought would be good to hold in the seats, and rip out the carpeting, i find myself in a quandry...
i pulled out the carpet cover"box" next to where the drivers seat was , and where i thought id find the release button wiring for the hatch, but its not there..
theres a hole in the "box" where i assume the button used to live, the radio fader **** was there, but also broken, but at least theres wiring present for that..but i cant find any for the hatch ****...i have replacements for both , i just need to find wireing for the hatch release..
from the hatch motor, the wiring seems to run to the passenger side, and i assume its supposed to cross over to the drivers side in the cockpit..but i cant find any wires that look like they may go there...nothin spooled up or tucked in that i can see..so im at a loss..
does anyone know how these wires are supposed to routed? where should i look ..even if the harnes has been unplugged i should have a connector someplace, shouldnt i?
any help on this would be appreciated..thanks in advance...

I didn't think the hatch release was available until '84 or '85, my '83 sure doesn't have one, though I wish it did.

hmmm, that could be the problem..

okay, so how does the hatch release motor operate if indeed there isnt supposed to be a switch in my 82? does the key trip a switch in the rear lock cylinder? Id simply assumed since there is definately a release motor in my car, that there was supposed to be a switch in the cockpit as well.. if i can figure out the wiring , i certainly should be able to add the switch though, its almost all ripped apart now anyhow, good time to run wires if needed.... further insight on would definatley be appreciated though.. i think im done for the day, when you shine your worklight and start seeing little insect eyeballs staring back at you, its time to lock it down , spray, and wait till morning to continue..
BTW-putting an old computer in the garage is the best thing ive come up with in awhile

Mine has no motor in the release, it's a purely mechanical latch........could you be seeing the wiper motor or it's relay?

My 79 has been retrofitted with the release motor. I installed the switch next to the drivers seat where the fade switch used to be. It is wired to be hot all the time. Definately a worthwhile project. If yours is retrofitted, there's no telling where they wired it into the harness. Do you have the wiring diagrams from the WSM's?. You definately need them.

okay, scratch this.. a closer inspection reveals i was looking at the wiper motor, and dont have a release motor (yet!) .. its a learn as i go thing..for some reason i looked at the wiper motor and mustve had a GM trunk release flashback..or maybe i inhaled too much bug spray...but im much better now..i think..
thanks for the replies though, ive gained a bit of education, and you can never learn enough about this stuff (so long as you dont confuse the cars/parts )

im going to run a set of wires from the release switch i have, back to the hatch lock area, this way if i decide to add a release motor later on , some of the work will already be done..
