Default help needed on ignition switch

Hello all, I need help with my ignition switch/lock. After having lost the key to my 928 (1980 euro 4.5 without factory alarm) I ordered a new one from the factory according to vin nr. This key fitted the car doors and rear hatch but not the ignition lock.... So I guess a previous owner changed the ignition lock sometime (the misplaced key didn´t fit the doors so that makes sence).

I removed the ignition lock and had a locksmith change it to fit the (new) original key. But after this I can turn the key to the "on" position (and all lights come on) but it doesn´t turn far enough to engage the starter. The locksmith swears that it can´t be the ignition lock itself since there is a locking pin that stops the key from turning any further. I can start the car with a screwdriver with the ignition lock removed.

Can anyone help me? Why can´t I engage the starter?

I guess I could install a start button but I would like to be able to start the car with my key.....

the connetor cam from the lock to the electrical switch may be worn or more likely the electric portion the part you turn with the screwdriver is bad .Very common failure. About $45 as I recall and pod must be removed to access.

Had the same problem and it was indeed the electrical portion of the situation. I got a new one for $32 early this year, IIRC

Same thing happened to me. Part was about $36 and a bear to change out althought the next time should be easier. With a bad switch all kinds of strange things were happening!

In my '79 track car I had the problem that the little rod that connects the tumbler to the electrical portion was worn just enough so it wouldn't engage the starter.
