Nope. Negative effects should only arise from adjusting the vacuum modulator to harden up the shifts, which can put extra stress on the box.

jpitman...when you drop the 3 spd down to second, does your bypass KD switch still function throwing the tranny down to first? Mine doesn't .

Keith,
No, they are just two different ways of energizing the same solenoid. To go down 2 gears (if the 3 speed will?) you would have to have a lot more throttle in it, AND be under the limiting speed for 1st gear change up. Even though you may not be hitting the under-pedal kickdown switch, the throttle position is relevant to the box' behaviour. Maybe by tightening the TV (Throttle valve) cable you could do it, but then either switch would do it, and the up changes would always be later.

Actually I meant pulling the shifter down to 2nd and then hitting the bypass KD. I have tried and the only way to drop from second to first is to slam the throttle. I thought maybe the bypass would work the same when the shifter is in 2nd position as it does in 3rd.

Keith, I think what you are seeing there (only goes down with WOT) is inter-relationship of the kickdown and the throttle position. The kickdown says to the box "he wants to go down some", then the box looks at throttle position, as indicated by the TV cable, and decides to go down 1 or 2 steps. Try holding the kickdown switch closed, then ease the throttle in until you get it down one gear. If you were quick, starting from a low speed, you might also be able to find the step where it goes down to 1st. If you want to get more responsive kickdowns, try tightening your TV cable, but do it gradually, its pretty sensitive. When mine would not go down with kickdown bypass on, I tightened the adjuster bolt 1 1/2 turns maybe, and it was just right (3 speed) for normal driving, and kickdown came in fine. If you havent already been there, you will probably find it loose due to cable stretch. The book is easy to follow on this, and warns to counter hold the shaft, not to tighten against it, or suffer internal damage.

Thanks, been down the cable tightening road. I will give it a shot. 2nd to first is a great rush with the pedal mashed. The car jumps up and screams. However, I would like to have the option of kicking down at part throttle sometimes.

Much appreciated!
