Rear Flex Plate Rivets?

How do I access the rear flex plate ('87S4) in order to check the rivets, and possibly replace them with bolts? Can this be done without dropping the tranny?

Steve the conventional wisdom is the transmission needs to be out of the car it might be possible to drop the fly wheel ,bellhousing,torque tube and then remove the front cover of the transmission but the recommended path is to drop the rear suspension and transmission. Be sure to put in new input bearings on the front cover and check the torque tube bearings.

Thanks Jim. The torque converter bearings were just replaced by nearby Zims. I wish I had thought of this while they had the transmission out. Seems like they would have noticed if the rear flex plate rivets were loose - they must have handled the part while doing the bearings and seals. I am still trying to find the source of the loud "clunk" when I accelerate from a standstill or brake in reverse. It has clunked since I got the car more than 3 years ago and has worsened a little. It is not as loud when the car is cold. New motor mounts did not eliminate the clunk. I have gone over the suspension, brakes and steering - everything is tight. Maybe there is a way I can at least check for loose flex plate rivets without removing the transmission?

Any possibility that the rear flex plate is cracked? or broken where it attaches to the Torque Convertor?
You may want to look thru the site holes to check.
