Hose size question...
Correct me if I am wrong, but the hose from the oil filler cap connects to the front left side of the intake, next to the throttle body. The diameter on the oil filler cap connection is close to 1 inch. The diameter on the intake connection is about 1/2 of that. How do I connect those two together? The hose that I took off of there, there P.O. simple took the smaller diameter size hose and slid it inside of the larger hose. That doesn't seem right to me. Anyone know how they connect?
Borys,
When we were changing out the vacuum lines, etc., this hose broke off due to heat & age hardening/brittle. The diameters of each end are diferent. I replaced it with a jury-rigged piece of heater hose for the smaller vertical part that attaches to the throttle body. I then used a brass street-ell and a barbed nipple along with a short piece of 1 inch clear, reinforced plastic hose to connect to the oil filler cap. It looks ugly, but works. I you want, I will upload a picture on Monday.
BTW, I assume that you are talking about part number 928 107 722 00. This feature found in the early Euro S models does not show up until 1983 in the US. Check out PET 1983 MG 1, SG 4, Illustration 104-00.
I threaded a 3/4 brass pipe fitting into the oil cap hose nipple. 3/4 pipe tap easy cuts a thread and the plastic is thick enough.
The bras fitting is 3/4 hose to 3/4 male pipe thread. The male end is screwed into the oil cap. For the hose I used steel braid with a fake looking anodized clamp. (looks good)
To mate the 3/4 hose to 1/2 hose use a brass reducer. I hid the reducer under the left intake tube.
You cannot get a barbed reducing fitting from 1" to 1/2" very easilly - so you have to go into brass and make a reducer and it looks cobbly (but works well). But, a barbed reducing connector from 1" to 3/4" in nylon is common at most hardware stores...
Try this: make the 1/2" nipple bigger by putting a 1" length of 1/2" hose on it. Then you can slide a 3/4" hose over that and run it ininterrupted up to your 3/4"to1" recucing connector. Looks clean and works well.
Note - use only a nylon reducing nipple (gets soft at about 240 degrees). Do not use plastic reducing nipple, they get soft at under-hood temperatures and will collapse.
