Default CD player upgrade

My Sony noisemaker is crapping out on me; the tuner/radio sounds good, but the CD deck won't play CDs anymore. Actually, I don't like this unit because it is ergonomically irritating. So someone advised me that all of them will eventually die because the CDs are played at an angle. Anyone able to corroborate that theory??

I was planning to invest in a Nakamichi, but admit to sophomorish familiarity with these units. In fact this is the first P car in which I have actually enjoyed the sound, as the others (particularly the 914/6) have such nice engine noise I didn't care. (can't even hear the one in the six unless at a stop light). I definitely don't want to invest in a CD changer or any more complicated equipment than I already have. The Sony sounds good enough 'cause I still love to listen to the 928 engine above 3000 rpm

And besides all of that, I have a Bear Tracker which is mostly at full volume while on the interstates. And a CB which I use also on rural roads.

I would be most appreciative if anyone knows a DURABLE and reasonably good sounding SIMPLE in dash unit for around $400 to $500. (Santa has budgets too). I toyed with the thought of an I-pod but that is externally attached and costs just about as much. I have removed the original amp next to the passenger's seat but can re-install it. Anyone have any suggestions(that are constructive ?? Singing isn't acceptable.

I bought a Nakamichi CD-45 in 1999 and I am very happy with it. I was looking at the new Nakamichi CD-400 ($289 on Ebay) but the display looks cheap. I love the new CD-700 but the $1300 price tag is a bit much.

The p/o of the 928 I just bought installed this stereo in March,
Eclipse CD3414

It sounds good, the layout is not great but for $200 it is a very good bang for the buck deck.

I just had an entry level Alpine installed in mine. I'm very pleased with it. $139 installed at Circuit City, 45Wx4, subwoofer controller, Bass Engine, Adjustable Eq, nice unit to use with stock speakers and suwoofer/amp

Both my 911 and 928 have JVC units in them. The neat thing about these units is that they can read CDs that have MP3 files stored on them. That makes for a great cross-country machine! One CD is now about 6 hours. The sound is fine, but not absolutely perfect. YMMV. Besides, don't you really want to listen to what the car is saying? (BWAAAAAAH!)

Cheers,
Peter

http://www.vwvortex.com/artman/publi...icle_650.shtml

id get one of Apline head units that are compatible with this(ipod controller) and eventually make your CDs obsolete.

40gigs makes for a LONG road trip!

Thanks Tony,

I'm in the area of Pecos and Windmill. I have a black/black 86 with chrome disc wheels and tinted glass. I had the Alpine put in at CC on Sahara, put in a Crunch Amp and Subwoofer tube on sale from Fry's and I'm getting compliments on the sound. Not bad for $230. I would love to get together with some Shark owners here. Maybe just park out somewhere and let people gawk at the cars. I'm just getting started on mine. You seem to be pretty well along.
