Thumbs up '83 Euro passes Oregon Emissions test...

There are many posts on here about those who can pass their states emissions tests with out a cat and many report how clean 928's run and I always look enviously at those posts because in Oregon, the emissions testing is tough on older cars and I can't imagine being able to pass with out a cat in the exhaust system. That being said, I wanted to let you know, I was able to pass the Oregon DEQ emissions test with my '83 Euro.

Here are the stats:
First try on 10/27:
THC Standard 2.0, me 8.46, Fail
NOX Standard 3.7, me 2.00, Pass
CO Standard 32.0, me 172, Fail
Noise Standard 93, me 96 Fail

New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and Major adjustments later:

on 12/15:
THC Standard 2.0, me 1.76, Pass
NOX Standard 3.7, me 2.65, Pass
CO Standard 32.0, me 0.0, Pass
Noise (didn't test) <;-) Pass

The car was so lean it would barely run, sounded really lopey at idle and major crackling and popping of exhaust under trailing throttle.

A wonderful christmas gift from DEQ. The gent driving it on the rollers did a great job and I am sure I would not have made it without his efforts too. By the way, regarding the noise, this time a couple of the workers said they liked how it sounded and did not test for noise. Yipee, skippee........ free for a couple more years.

Cheers
JF

Just to update this thread and give you an idea of the chasm between federalized euros and a US S4. I ran our '88 A/T through the test this morning. This was done with no tune up, no particular warm up, no concessions to the test at all. I don't know how this might compare to others numbers, but these S4's sure run clean. There is a stunning amount of difference with the euro. Anyway, here ya go....

on 12/18 our '88 S4 A/T:
THC Standard 2.0, me .28, Pass
NOX Standard 3.7, me .76, Pass
CO Standard 32.0, me 2.2, Pass

Can you post a sound clip or something of it starting up and then some?

I should start a thread for that.
