Lightbulb Auto Trans B2 Piston P/M Issue

Found this scanning for background on the auto box, and pass it on as the strong recommendation is to service the B2 piston as a Preventative Maintenance issue - to avert the risk of more costly damage later. The topic is well presented ....

So what is the advice of you experienced Xmission Gurus? - oh, and BTW, can this be serviced 'in situ' on our cars? I recall reading somewhere that it could, but ...

This exact failure is the reason I now work on 928's. Soon after purchasing my 86.5' I had this failure. Two different local "Porsche Specialist's" informed me that I needed a new transmission due to transmission wear. I know that it's rare for a sudden failure to be caused by wear. The transmission worked perfectly up to the point of failure. After doing some research, I found out about the B2 piston issue, replaced in my garage without dropping the tranny. I have since put 50k+ miles on the same transmission, many at very high speed without problem. One of the shops (now out of business) charged me $120, added 2 quarts of fluid and told me that the transmission was toast, lucky it got me as far as it had. That was the turning point for me, now I work on everyone else's 928's.
