Oil Seperator Question

Default Oil Seperator Question

In my version of PET, it shows that between the oil seperator itself and the block there is only a gasket, PN 928 107 771 00. When I removed it a while ago on my car, there was a gold/bronze colored metal piece between the two, and no gasket. The gold/bronze piece was metal, thin, and seperated into two pieces; one gasket type shape, the other had a metal part inside of it, which had slots cut into it that looked like they were supposed filter? the oil. Which one is correct? I cannot find either part of this in my WSM. Thanks

I struggled with the same. I think PET references both. My gasket was 92810716901.

I used gasket sealant and thread sealant on the bolts. Since we both have 80s, I'd be suprised if the part was different.

edit: The above refers to the oil filler tube that mates to the block? If that's it, just search 928 intl. for oil filler.

Borys-
The part you're describing sounds like it may have been a previously installed screen to help improve the oil separator. If I'm picturing the part in my head correctly, the slots may be to let the air through, with the hope of knocking the oil vapor out of suspension before it is sucked back into the intake.
I constructed something similar, and it seems to have decreased the oil ingestion.
Just my $0.02, perhaps I'm way off base.

My '86.5 car has that same piece in there. It's obviously some sort of baffle designed to let oil flow in from the filler but to interfere with misted oil from the crank-case. The whole PVC systetm on this thing is a mystery to me. The fact that the induction plenum(s) collect oil is pretty good proof of the design flaw, I'd say!

My '78 had the Devek baffle installed by the PO. I am sandwiching it between two gaskets. It only had a gasket on one side and was leaking badly into the vee.

Yeah, it looks like that, Steve, but it seperated into two pieces when I tried to clean the crap off of it.

Keep it... I think it keeps the oil mess from creepking out the filler spout.

I would also suggest keeping the part installed. At sustained higher RPMs, the engine creates enough vacuum to suck oil vapor out of the crankcase, and when the vapor is mixed with your intake charge, will allow detonation to occur sooner. (I believe the oil lowers the octane value, but I am not positive of that) The detonation can do no good for the engine, so for the price of an extra gasket, my vote is to keep the part.
