Clutch or syncro problem ?? - slipping 1st gear
Hello to all
I have the following problem on my '83 5-speed with 140K miles on it: Sometimes at a complete stop and while engaging 1st gear in order to move, the gear slips out back to neutral...I then have to shift and HOLD the gear lever in place back to 1st otherwise the same thing happens...I've read in the forum that most early 5-speeds had problems with the syncros on high mileage cars....I have no history of clutch or tranny repairs from the previous owner. So I have no idea if anything was ever replaced.
I'm not sure if this problem is related to a weak clutch or bad syncros or something else....Has anyone experienced similar problems??
A few times even holding the shifter firmly into 1st does not work...It pops out of gear. Then I'm forced to get the car moving again using 2nd gear....There are no problems on any other gears but 1st...
Any suggestions will be appreciated - Bill

Failed synchro will have you crunching first when you try to engage it on the move. My guess is that your gearstick is not centred properly and is fouling the console. Perhaps you have lost your ball cup bushing and you needed that tenth of an inch to fully engage first before the stick hit the console.
Fore and aft adjustment is by screwing the infamous shift rod ball cup out or in (replace it while you're in there). Sideways adjustment is via the rear coupling, inside the rubber boot on the shift rod, just in front of the transmission.

Thanks for the response Glenn
I did a quick search on the "ball cup" you mentioned and found little info about it. Is this cup located at the end of the long gear rod under the car or at the end of the gearstick?? ...It sounds like that could be my problem...At least I relieved to know that is not related to the syncros or clutch.
Can this ball cup be changed easily if I can get under the car in my garage?? Any special tools needed??
Thanks again - Bill

pull up the bottom of the shift boot and see if the base of the shift lever is hitting on the flat metal plate that is welded to the end on the rear shift rod. Also note if there is any for aft movement of the forward shift rod. There should be no play in the forward rod and just a very slight play for/ aft movement of the rear with no radial play. The easy adjustment is made at the rear of the rear shift rod under the rubber boot. Mark the location prior to loosening the clamp and make small adjustments to move the position of the shift leverif needed.

There is a procedure to replace the shifter ball cup at http://www.928intl.com/tips/artcl_04.html (or go to 928intl.com, select "Restore More Precise Shifting" article from the "928 Intl. Articles" drop-down menu).
I have changed my shifter cup, and I didn't disconnect the linkage at the base of the gearshift lever.
There are more comments at http://www.nichols.nu/tip553.htm
