Brake Squeal
I'm a new owner of an '88 AT. I have read many of the web forum items regarding brake squeal but most of them involve changing the pads. The previous owner of my shark had new brakes put on less than 2k miles ago, so I'd like to avoid replacing parts, if that's possible. I was wondering what the latest thinking is on products that can be applied in some way to reduce the squeal. I'm starting to sound like a subway car when I pull in to my garage.
If I compare the picture of the brakes in the shop manual to what I see on the car, should I be able to tell if the dampeners are missing? If so, is installing the dampeners something I can do myself? I'm new at this, sorry for all the questions. Thanks very much for your help.
Yes, you can tell the dampers are missing. If the dampers are there, but just not bonded to the pads, you can buy new dampers, or you can clean the contact surfaces on the dampers and pads and glue them on with hi-temp silicone.
Yes, you can do it yourself - sounds as if you have the manuals, so good on yer, mate!
