I think this race's results had more to do with the facts that the MC has a high-torque engine and a transmission designed to capitalize on this fact...and the fact that a 928's gearing and torque curves were not selected for....drag racing. You won anyway-

Even though it is said that the S4 is 5.7 0 - 60 I still think it is not a killer off the line nor at lower speeds. Hit it at 60 and the *** end wants to pass the front end. Mike, what I am going to do is dyno my car now as it is. Then I plan some injector work along with a full tune and then see where I'm at and see what kind of difference it makes. Maybe you should consider doing the same if you think the car is not up to par.

Mike,
A S4 auto shifted manually (starting with the lever in 2nd) should be able to do a 6.0-6.4
sec 0-60, 7.1 seconds seems a little slow. The tranny should shift to 2nd when it hits
5,600-6,000 rpm (under full throttle), then manually shift to 3rd when you hit 6,400 rpm
in 2nd. If you were starting in D (drive) then you're starting in 2nd, not 1st gear, then your
0-60 will be slower. At least that's the way my auto tranny works. Just a thought...

I just but a chip in my car and wow what a difference I did it myself in an hour with a screwdriver and an allen wrench. All gears are more powerful but third gear hang on. I have a 5 spd.

Since you really seem to be bothered by this event, go find a Typhoon or Syclone to race. You'll really feel like crap getting your a$$ handed to you by a 10-15 year old V6 SUV or pickup in a drag race. 928s are autobahn cars, not stoplight cars. You can still take just about any car in a 50-150MPH race with a 300HP+ 928. I'll guarantee you'd take that Monte by a lot more than 1 car length.

It is difficult to know what the performance of a 928 is supposed to act and feel like when there are no other 928 friends around to compare with. An occasional stop light or highway race (or entrance ramp sprint) is the only performance gauge that some of us have for our car.

I can attest to that. About a year ago I ran a new CL500 from 70-125 till a lone car in the distance stopped us. Had him by just over half a car length when I had to back out. He wanted to race me off the line but I knew better. He wasnt a happy camper.

I did a MAF rebuild with the shop listed below for $195. Pulled my MAF, they had one ready to pick up. I posted the rebuilders name back in 12-03. They also do LH rebuilds for around $300. No problems with the rebuilt unit. They also do injector work. Let me know if you have any questions about them. They are in Southern California.

Even from 'Dunce' your tranny should do a first gear start if you floor it. You should be between 6 and 6.5 sec from 0-62mph. I think that you need to cover the easy basics first. Throttle cable, tranny cable and tranny shift firmness.
If the throttle cable is not adjusted properly (fully opening when the accelerator is floored), you may be leaving HP on the table. If the tranny doesn't start in 1st gear when you floor it, your kick down switch may not be working. If the tranny is not snapping off shifts at 6000+ rpm, you are not hitting the power peak of the engine. If the tranny is slushing through the shifts, you are wasting energy. Once those are good, look for the more expensive fixes like MAFs etc.
Just my .02.

Cameron. The only time I get anything close to a 6000 rpm shift would be in D at 105 kmph = 5800rpm!
This is an old problem. I can never get the shift points right!! The cables are played with more than I tie my shoes!- Never Ever has my car gone off the line from D- and shifted to first at full throttle. That only happens when she's stopped at a light in 2nd. It will then shift at a few hundred rpm less than 6000!
J.Kkelly- cats. can't be clogged because they're gutted!!- I think I've got a lot of work to do on this car-Where to start- Also it's minus 22 degrees celcius here, and my garage isn't heated.
Mike -Thanks for replies.
