Hi Carl,
thank you for your comments

I totally agree with you concerning belt tensioning and I hope others did not miss your point.

Over the years I have seen mechanics AT DEALERSHIPS use long pieces of timber to tighten drive belts on my trucks - and I have seen a variety of items fail because if it!
I have also made them pay for their error too!!

It is all a case of using belts with a suitable surface area and the CORRECT tension!

One of my sons is a diesel mechanic with Caterpillar and is well aware of Used Oil Analysis - not only after listening to and working with me for some years but doing it now for them too! Cat were a leader in UOA commencing their programmes nearly 40 years ago

Some Labs carry out Interpritive reporting along with providing the ppm result. I have seen many wrong "Warning" reports to Fleet owners over the years from inexperienced Lab Technicians. My Company has been used as the independant Arbitrator in the Civil Cases that sometimes result. Most Labs now simply provide "Advisory" findings with the ppms - and the Engineer's telephone number for personal contact.
I first commenced using UOAs over 40 years ago on diesel (Allis Chalmers, Komatsu, Isuzu, MB) and petrol engines (MB, VW and Porsche) and from drive line components

Carl, Mobil 1 10w-30 has a HTHS of only 3.17cSt.
A great oil for your application is Delvac 1 5w-40 (HTHS 4.1cSt) which is what I use or its "twin" Mobil 1 SUV 5w-40. These Group 5 synthetic oils (mixed fleet Heavy Duty - API CI-4/SL) are especially good in the fire belt and ring pack area and in working with high compression pressures/temperatures

As a matter of interest I love the earlier 928s and I miss the MY81 I had before I got my S4!

Regards
Doug

Doug - your Caterpillar experience brings back memories. In the 1970's I ran an import-car repair shop in Madison WI and raced a few things on the side.
We did used oil analysis for oursleves (it was new then) and offered it to our customers for a fee. The only place doing it (that we knew of) was the Cat dealership down the road. It was excellent, and pretty cheap too.

I was wondering - have you seen this book and do you have any comments on it? http://www.noria.com/secure/product_...p?catalogid=18
