Alarm question? Gremlins or Ghosts?
I was reviewing all my notes to install a remote door opener on my 88 S4, and checked to see if the central locking system would arm the alarm when actuated (as an aside, it doesn't arm the alarm). When I tried to check the alarm on my 88, well...it didn't work,.. I locked the door with the key and then reached in though the open window and opened the door, no alarm,...but if I did this to the 85 , the alarm would sound. Also I checked to see if the hood button would actuate the alarm, i.e. on the 85 popping the hood latch though an opened window would cause the alarm to go off. Well, at that point I thought why not read the owner's manual section on alarms, it said " cars with an alarm the key is longer", this is true with my 85 but the key on the 88 did not look as long as the picture sugested in the owner's manual.... I then checked the oringinal window stickers on both cars (when the PO's stated they had documentation, they meant everything!) and I noticed that the 85 lists "alarm system" as a factory option, and there isn't anything listed on the 88's window sticker option side, nor the standard equipment side. So the question is- were the factory alarms an option only item, non standard issue? or do I try to search for the alarm on the 88? I originally was only going to add a remote opener for the door ( as per a previous post of mine) but if indeed I lack a "factory alarm" then I need to install both the remote access and an alarm.

Ed,
It was standard on the 89 - just looked at the window sticker - don't know about the 88.

To arm and disarm you must have a long key. It turns a switch on the back of the door lock. So if your door lock has a switch and wires it is an alarm car, no wires no alarm. Same is true for rear hatch lock IF it is original.
