Devek shifter is very nice and a fairly priced unit. Don't know about the others.

Good luck.

Wally, an excellent point.
John, if you look at the pic in the link of my last post - you will note I escaped the easy way: The initial surgery was done 'in situ', so the filing/hacksaw work was limited - I also chopped some of the hard rubber of the **** insert off under the leather rather than eat away at the Gr 8 metal ( 10 sec vs 10 hrs). Works well! It was only when I was older and not wiser that the stick was removed ...

some pictures:

The first is a short throw vs a GT shifter the second is vs the S4 shifter....So I am told...Be interesting to see the red and blue ones next to eachother to see if the pivot points are the same. I installed the red one.....

Apparently the older shifters pivot points are further apart than either of the short shifters pictured and for that matter either of the GT or S4 shifter....

Gretch - great pics. Turn the shifters 90 degrees and take pics again. You should find that the aftermarket shifters have wider linkage bosses - allowing for removal of the slop spring. That is another reason why they are better.

I would say that the gold shifter in the second pic is not an S4 shifter, but actually an early model shifter (because of color, distance between linkage points, and extreme length ). I would also guess that if you placed the blue short throw shifter in the first pic next to the red short throw shifter in the second pic, that the red one would have its linkage points further apart than the blue one. And, if you placed the gold stock shifter next to the blue short shifter, that they would be the same, or at least very very close, throw spacing.
So maybe the red one is type I, for pre 85 and the blue one is type II for 85+ (as Carl said, there are two types). Or, maybe one is a Devek and the other is everyone else?
Carl, what are the differences between Type I and Type II??

Gretch-

I think your second picture must be a pre 85 as I assume this pic was taking in the car it was being installed. Notice the leather stiching around the dash vent. IIRC Porsche pretty much droped the leather dash concept by 85 (unless you REALLY REALLY wanted it).

I cannot say for sure what year the longer shifter is. When I was researching the whole short shifter thing, I collected what ever pictures there were available on the subject. That one was titled S4, So I left it that way. It is a long sucker, isn't it.....

I just wanted to post an update on Morphing a Broomhandle. It has taken me a little bit of driving around to get used to the new feel of the shifter. A tad bit more effort is required to push and pull the lever into gear, but not much. The "notchiness" of shifting is a little more prominent too.
On the positive side, compared to the stock shifter, it is definitely a shorter throw (quicker shift) and tighter feeling pattern. The side to side movement feels more stiff without the springs. I like being able to use flick-of-the-wrist shifting instead of moving the whole arm. It's probably the same feeling as an aftermarket shifter, except I didn't cut the length quite as short.
........and it cost less too!

The picture of the red one is from my car, check this thread (link) out.

There are two animated .gif files there as well, one is linked to due to its size (500kb).
