Default Whats this 78 5 speed worth?

Everyone
A friend of mine is thinking about selling his 78 928 5 speed, white over tan leather (nots houndstooth) updated to "S" airdam and wing.....only 77K miles, engine is strong and passes CA smog, trans needs syncros (upshifts but not down), occasional noise from rear end (probably CV joint), Body is straight and paint is good, interior is shot, but he has extra carpet and leather to redo it (left over from when it was redone years ago), A/C doesn't work, dash lights don't work, passenger door lock is finicky, ignition is a modified "push button", but won't start without key. WP/TB was done about 6K miles ago, tires are good, clutch is fairly new as well.

It drives very strong, it upshifts smooth, you just have to double clutch to get it to downshift without grinding...brakes and handling are good, just needs TLC on lots of little things. I figure it would make a great track car or restoration project.

He is looking to sell it fairly cheap (he also has a clean 87 S4), how much does everyone think it is worth? The car is located in Stockton CA.
Thanks

Wow! I guess that's what we call keeping the value of the car up so that when you sell it you get as little as humanly possible for it.

Last time I looked NADA listed retail prices at $9,000 to $14,000. Deduct at least $3,000 for major repairs and cut the value in half if it's being sold at auction (EBay). The 78 and 79 models are the only 928's to has gone up in value in the last 4 years as reported by Excellence magazine and NADA.

Pat I agree, but it sounds as if there are major repairs. Not 500 bucks that is ridiculous. The car is worth a lot but in its present state the seller will get little. I think he will get 1500 as is. If he fixes it nicely he will get much more.

I hear ya 'H', but buddy like your 911 will likely be sold the 928 needs to start coming into, and that is, the value of of the car as the owner thinks its worth(within reason). Part of my fear buying a my next 928 is the value carpet will be swept from inderneath me because we love these cars so much but are unwilling to pay a little bit more to put our butt in the seat of a great deal.

In other words there are a fair number of us that own these cars between the various lists that you, Dennis, and I participate on. So it is pretty safe to say that the lion-share of these vehicles is owned by us (except me at this moment) and we really control the market for these cars. By comparision to all other Porsche cars the 928 in one catagory by itself is still a rare car (remember less than 25,000 examples of the car arrived on our shores over the 18 years the car was made). There is probably a pretty significant attrition that is added to the rarity and if we check the 928 registry, less the grey market Euro models, would it be safe to say that perhaps half to two thirds of all 928's built for the US are still on the road today? 78 and 79 models are just positvely disappearing. Supply and demand should push the value of this car car up not down.

Try an buy a 356 tub, early model 911, or even a 912 for that matter. The owners in those registry's keep the values high for those cars it is time we started doing the same for the 928 and not let the value of these great cars erode away thus giving creeps like Keith Martin (The Jounalist not our good friend) the statisfaction of continually destroying the value of these cars too.

All true. My statement was specifically to give the seller an idea of what to expect and honestly I don't see getting more than that. In the real world today, there are all sorts of crazy throw-away prices going on. I tried to sell my ex's S4 in excellent shape recently, all new parts, fully serviced, tbelt in past 6k miles, 12-way heated seats, no cracks in the interior, no flares in the quarters, wheels as-new chromed, for 10k.

One guy mails me and says if I can have it shipped to him for a total of 8k all-in, he may consider it. You can imagine what I told him. This is the real world.

Besides the scarcity, the 78-79 928's are going up in value because folks are realizing they do not have the maintenace issues of the later models. The noninterference engines and CIS are very reliable IF the car is driven routinely. BTW I paid $4,500 for my 5 speed in 2000 and the total non-routine repairs/maintenance costs have been less than $400 and it is my daily driver.

'H' have you sold that car yet? If not, hang on I may want to snap that up from you in a week or two. I am canceling my order for the 2005 997S (too m any issues are appearing on the first year) and going to pick up a 02' Twin Turbo. I wanted to grad a 928S4 auto as a daily driver and your wife car in Diamond Blue Met. is simply a beaut. and for $10K its a steal!

OOOP's just saw your second post...car is sold...damn!

As much as I hate to say this, but from what it sounds like, the car would be worth more in parts than as a whole.
