Salt watch - here it comes. Hello winter maintainance!

Michigan is expected to get a couple of inches of snow today, which means the salt will start flying. So no more shark driving until spring. Time to get the winter mmaintainance under way.

So far this is on my list:
1. Replace aluminum ball joints
2. Replace tie rod ends
3. Replace/service shocks
4. Remove cast manifolds and install 85-86 "Headers"
5. Remove the cats
6. Find a Y-pipe to fit
7. Adjust door locks (driver side is off a bit so when I unlock from the pass side, they just cycle back to locked)
8. Adjust felt window guides
9. Resolder cruise control brain
10. Seriously look at SCing the 'ol 82 - don't tell the wife
11. Buy new wheels/tires after I've decided on SCing or not.
12. BRAKES! Almost forgot about those. Front's look fine, but will probably replace with something that doesn't sound like a stuck pig. Rears are gone!

I think that's about it. I should be able to get it done by spring assuming I don't break an exhaust stud. Anyone have tips on removing the manifolds beyond dipping the car in PB Blaster for a week?

I'll be propping her up on jacks soon too. I've decided against doing the rod bearings yet. So I will:

1) Resurface Flywheel
2) Bleed clutch and change master/slave if needed
3) Maybe I'll R&R the intake
4) change Diff. Fluid
5) Lots of inspection and cleaning underneath also.

I'll be doing the following:

(1) replacing transmission mounts
(2) transmission fluid/filter
(3) steering rack boots, maybe steering rack
(4) getting tires mounted on my polished wheels
(5) replacing brake fluid with super blue
(6) finding vacuum leak inside dash
(7) replacing drop links with Ott items when they arrive
(8) doing something about buckled interior panels in trunk area
(9) doing something about leather near dash vents... pulled away and sagging
(10) assorted polishing and cleaning
(11) replacing idle stabilizer valve

That's it. Actually I'm quite pleased the list is that short... compared to what I had to do when I bought the car in May, I've made huge progress.

Yeah, when the snow started coming down on Wednesday night, I had to face the fact that the dumb Road Commission guys were going to slather the roads with salt and that the car had seen its last day of the season. Hate it! Thankfully, I washed and gave it a quick polish on Monday, so she's sitting pretty.

Hey Andrew, I'd love to help out with any and all of your projects; I don't have much wrenching experience, and less 928 experience (as you know), but I'd love to learn and gain some. Send me a pm, or I'll give you a ring this weekend.

This is my first winter with the car. To our fairer climate friends: be thankful you don't have to deal with this separation anxiety!

Default Up on stands

Curt, I thot that leaving a shark upon stands was a no-no due to wheels and suspension hanging out there too long?

No salt on the roads out this way. We like to tear them up with chains. I drive my shark on nice days in the winter. I feel bad for you guys who have to put them up for the season.

Andrew,
I'm with ya.... In with the 928 and out with the snow shovel (as of last wednesday).

I also want to recap this past summers driving. It was awesome! I put on something like 5K miles and no major problems. Intermittent window switched became a PITA and the sunroof took a crap on me. Otherwise smooth sailing.

Most notable drives -
-A beautiful scenic northern Michigan tour including a jaunt across the Mackinaw Bridge, then down to Traverse City for the Cherry Festival, and a hike at the old Sleeping Bear Dunes.
-Another trip to Traverse City with a cruise and stayover on Old Mission Penninsula, wine tasting, kayaking, jet ski and lots of Coronas w/friends.
-And the last major trip was 600 mile trek around lower Michigan on a job interview spree. From Saginaw to Grand Rapids to Grand Haven to Royal Oak and home. Phew!

I guess I'll post my list too...
- new sunroof cables
- new window switches
- HVAC vaccuum actuator replacement. and blower fan 'ghost' WYAIT
- Redye leather armrest (drivers) and left seat bolster
- Cruise R&R - Hey Andrew, so you are good w/a soldering iron? Let me know how it goes.
-Adjust clutch. Not that it is bad, just want to make sure it is in still in spec
And in the not so distant future... but maybe not this winter.
- S4 brake upgrade
- New paint

It was nice to have all my winter projects from last year done on time for carefree spring/summer driving.

Chaadster,
Hey..... buddy ole pal. If you are looking for some wrench time around a 928, I'm always looking for a good friend. Beer and pizza included. These reason I say' around' a 928 is often you will find me with a wrench in one hand and a beverage in the other. Just starring at the Shark. Yup.... uhuh... Yep...
...you get the idea.

Jim,
LOL! The way those 18"s fill out your rear wheel wells is deserving of some "stare time"! Say, can you post a full profile pic, just so I can drool?!

BTW, how do those wheels handle the crappy MI roads? I like the ride quality with my stock slotted chromies, but I've been dreaming of a three piece, centers painted body color...
