Default 2005 Porsche Parade Autocross Rules

Hi:
The newest issue of Panorama has me thinking about going to Parade this year since it will be held in Hershey, Pa and I live in Ohio. I am thinking about running in the autocross. I have had some success in our Ohio based regional events, but going to Parade looks to be a "whole nother animal".

At our last autocross of the year there was some discussion that Porsche National would be consolidating some of the classes. This leads to the general question of what the rule book will say for the upcoming year.

With the 928 tucked away for a few months I am "bench racing" and would like to know if anyone has a set of the new rules and guidelines so that if I get serious about heading to Parade I can maximize my car for it's class...or more likely just make sure that there are not any "bad" modifications that would unnecessarily bump me up into a class where I would have no chance.

If anyone could shed some light on the rules for the upcoming year or are thinking about also preparing their 928 for the event I would like to share ideas.

Regards,

Ken B.

Ken, the Rules book is usually sent along with the registration information packet after you register. See you there hopefully. Before the Parade, I am planning to go to the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. If you know of anyone else who wants to go please let me know so we could go as a group. Look in the Wanted section of Panorama for my ad on this subject.

Ron:

It' a bit of a catch 22 then. I really didn't want to register unless I thought the mods I have made would still fit in a class.

Regards,

Ken

Ken:
I looked for my old Parade rules books but must have thrown them out. I usually wait until the day of the autocross to classify my car, since there are so few 928 entrants. If you tell me the mods I might be able to give you an idea of the penalties you'll pay and the likely bump up you'll make. Wheels and suspension are mostly "free", engine mods are costly, particularly stroke or bore increases. Cams are in the middle, but 928s don't usually have such an array of options. Usually we run against ourselves, except cars like the Devek white car which is tweaked so much. Also, 928s are HEAVY which is a real penalty in the autocross. 914s are the cars to beat at the Parade autocross.
You might also check the PCA websites from past parades to scan any rules from those events. Simply put, unless you are seeking top time of day, the autocross is over so fast that it is mostly fun for 928s; others take it damn seriously and the action is furious for some.

Ken just go and enter for fun. It is NOT a national championship just another diversion entertainment along with the parade down main street, gimmick rally , tour of the chocolate factory. Many of the drivers enter as a lark never having done one before it is really not a serious event except as Ron notes for a very few trying to set fast time of day. There have been so many different classes that in many cases you are competing against only a couple drivers. Often the times of stock class cars are better than those of more modified higher class cars. Like I said it is NOT a national championship any and all can enter and drive and many do.

Ken & Jim:

Thanks for the reply. Jim...I know you are right, I should just have fun...and I will, but I also like to be competitive if possible. I was actually able to turn an FTD time this year at one of the events.

The other aspect of this is that any change they make in the rules will effect me in the Porsche Club events I run with the six regions in Ohio as they also adopt and use the Parade guides through out the year. There are some things that I have been thinking about, like headers and a piggy back unit. I'd like to know before I jump what the consequences will be.

I contacted the Autocross chair and learned that the rules are available on line at PCA.org. Use the library heading under Members and Services Contacts. It appears that there will be a number of classes merged. The final determination as to the rules for the upcoming parade will be finalized in the next few weeks with the new rules available on the PCA Website after December 1st.

Best regards,

Ken B
