928 ownership costs to date
This not a gripe session.
I bought my shark in late August 2003. A beautiful 94 GTS. The PPI checked out and I believe I got a good deal. Bruce Anderson appraised the car at $30k and I bought it for less than that.
So far, in 15 1/2 months, and 19,000 miles, I've spent $8,311 in parts, repairs, tires, etc. and $2,050 for 93 octane unleaded (including a couple of tanks of 100 octane unleaded at VIR).
I drive the car as much as possible, certainly more than I thought I would and a lot more than I told the insurance company I would!
If something needs to be done to the car, I generally do it. Most work is now done by me, with an occasional trip to a service shop. Using a credit card is like using chips on a blackjack table, it doesn't seem like money.
The rough breakdown is as follows:
Service shop repairs, tuneup, trans flush, alignment, A/C problems, tire puncture fix, annual inspection, $2,655.
New tires, Michelin Pilot Sports, $1,000
Detailing, cleaning supplies, $330
Headlight parts to fix what Bambi broke $856
Sunroof seals, oil filters, oil, oil sump gasket, cam cover gasket kit, fender service covers, tuneup kits (2), plug wires, car covers (2), owner's manual, belts, bulbs, PET and workshop manuals on CD, switch overlays & door stops, brake pads, front brake sensors, a/c relay, floor mats, filter wrench, extra keys, relays, relays, relays, , fire extinguisher, god know what else.....$3,452
This does not include the $572 in tools I have bought, including a multi-meter, jack insert, relay pulling tool, various socket sets, hex wrenches, torque wrenches, jack stands and such.
Oh, and there is the $544 I've spent on 3 DE days at VIR.
And the $17.95 for Rennlist membership. Definitely got my money's worth on that one.
The winter projects planned (parts already on hand, see above), include oil pan gasket, engine mounts, cam tower gasket (passenger side), PSD fluid change, general underside cleaning.
So, I've got a well outfitted garage, and a car that I drive almost daily. I'm driving to Florida this Thursday for a long weekend of golf, so add another 1500 miles to the total. Oh, yeah, I also ordered a Valentine One radar/laser detector too, which isn't included above, but I figure it may keep me from gitting a ticket.
The car runs great and looks fabulous. It turns head every day and keeps a grin on my face all the time. These cars are not investments, not if you drive them. Certainly additive though.
Many thanks to those on the forum who have helped with questions and problems. I hope my responses have been helpful too. Thanks to Jim B, Jeannie and Dave for their help too.

$8000 ???? That's it ???? I laugh in your direction. (no offence intended) With a car as nice as yours with that kind of mileage on it. Consider yourself one lucky guy. As you, and everyone else knows, these cars are not for the faint hearted, or the faint of wallet. But sooooo worth it. Thank goodness there are groups of us 928 nut cases to help each other out and keep the marque alive.

That is an excellent point, most well cared for (documented) GTS's (Bills is a fine example) should hold thier value fairly well. Say Bill decides to sell his GTS in a couple years, there will be several of us here on the list that will fight to get it! Plus a new BMW of M/B will depreciate at least 9K in 15 months!
