Default Differential Control OFF

Hi Folks

I'm new here. Have a '92 GTS Manual and this evening, after re-tensioning the cam belt the onboard computer came up on the display with the message that the PSD was OFF (I assume in error condition).

Does anyone know what could cause this or where to look and what I should do?

Regards
Chris

Hey chris

Have you noticed a wet patch on the ground or under the rear pu just behind the rear wheel on the left hand side ............

Has your psd system been flushed in the last 2 years..............

Hi there

No wet patch under the rear left side of the car, no. Have only had the car for three weeks so not sure when the PSD was last looked at. Have done about 1000 miles in the car in the three weeks (what can I say!) and she's been fine until this evening.

Just did a cam-belt retension and am sure we couldn't possibly have touched anything in the front of the car which would interfere with the PSD... could we?

Thanks a million for your response.

Occam's razor suggests - and you surmise - that the PSD shutdown is due to something you disturbed in your retension operation. The front engine harness - from the 14-pin jump point, across the front of the engine, to the starter, alternator, and ABS hydraulic unit (and various sensors) is something that could have been disturbed. The ABS system and PSD are integrated. I believe that the PSD system will shutdown if the ABS also indicates a fault.

Check the 14-pin connector and the ceramic connector on the other side of the bay next to the brake bias regulator. If you loosened the clamp for the power steering fluid reservoir to make clearance for the fan shroud then you would have been in the vicinity of the ceramic connector that connects power from the front harness to the ABS pump. Removing the shroud might have disturbed it too. (Note, that if you do find an issue with the thick wire, it is a live wire. Disconnect the battery before you disturb it.) Below is a picture of the wire - shown disconnected from the terminal.

It's a total long-shot but your problem certainly sounds electrical in nature. As suggested above check the fuses and relays as well.

It is also possible that the PSD system decided to go South coincidentally with your retension.

Hi Chris

do you also get a ABS off message with your PSD message?

Dan, that's a good point - that the ABS message should also be displayed if an ABS system fault is also shutting down PSD.

Also, it should be noted that the ABS warning will first be displayed, then the PSD warning will be displayed in place of the ABS warning and the PSD warning will remain until canceled.

Thus, you would need to diligently watch the display during the ignition sequence to catch the ABS warning (if any.)

You are right Bern. The ABS fault is a priority II alert. I don't have a reference for the priority of the PSD alert. I recalled - perhaps incorrectly - that a Priority I alert will display over a lower priority alert.

Nevertheless, what I should have written is that attention should be paid to observing and acknowledging each fault.

When you put a later model 928 on a two-wheel dyno there are numerous faults displayed as a result of the rear wheels and front wheels not turning at close to the same speed. ABS and PSD are two of them. I don't recall if the RDK system complained. Nor do I recall the order of fault displays. Nor does the FM indicate the order in which they would be displayed and thus the use of 'diligence.'

In any case if no ABS fault is displayed then my thought that disturbance of the front harness could lead to the PSD fault will be a wild goose chase.
