Default Just installed Sylvania SilverStars

Hey,

I just installed Sylvania Silverstars. They are billed as "the brightest halogen headlights you can buy." We'll see. Although I haven't tested them at night yet, they were definitely brighter than the halogens that were in there. 24 bucks at Champion.

Anybody else running these?

I put the silverstars in a few months ago, and they seem to work great. I don't have a lot to compare with since the lights I took out had badly rusted reflectors and the lenses on my Outback are shot too. I had replaced the rusted units with cheap sealed beams and was really unhappy with them, which sent me to the silverstars. One thing that had me worried the first night I drove it is that the lights, on low beam, are oriented more to the right than I was used to. But after I made sure the left one was working it became evident that there was more light straight ahead, and they are really good on high.

the only real issue with the silerstar lights is that they are basially designed to run at 10 volts but then 12-14 volts are pumped into them making them brighter than a regular halogon, this causes them to burn out uber fast I have heard of them lasting only 1 month and having the drivers side go out and then 1 week later the pass side, the persons who have had this happen have contacted silverstar and they were unwilling to replace the bulbs free of charge.

if you want to get good bulbs get PIAAs

I'm not doubting you, but why would Sylvania design them for 10V? Aren't they marketed as OEM replacements?

I was just out at the Sylvania site and their product comparison page does seem to imply that the life of these lights will be less than the standard OEMs or Xtravisions or whatever. That's a little disgruntling, since I paid a premium for the lights...

Well, too late now. I'll let folks know if they croak in a hurry.

Had them in for a while and haven't had an outtage yet. They are definitely brighter and more of a white light than the stardard halogens. I vote yes on them for now......

I had them in my truck. They didn't last a year. Carry spares with you...

I switched out to H-4s and put them in both the H-4s as well as the H-3s (fog lights). They are much whiter and allot brighter. Did not know that they won't last long.

For those of us that still suffer with 7" lights with crome rims, I highly recommend spending $50 on a new set of Hellas and then some extra on higher wattage bulbs.

The most bang for the buck comes with a good pattern, rather than more brightness.

Do you have to upgrade the wiring to switch to more powerful lights? I know that's an issue on the 911...

I had put in a set of Hella 100/80's "bright white" a few years back, and for the money and time invested, they are the sh*t. I have poor night vision, and with those I could see great. They are listed for "off road use only". I did have to replace the drivers side pigtail after a few months, but then had no further issues with them. After a couple of years one finally blew, and Jeannie had problems getting the same bulbs from her distributor. She finally tracked down some 100/80's , but they are NOT the bright white's. Definitely not as good. I was thinking of trying the Sylvanias, before hitting the mail order parts places up for the PIAA or Hella 100/80 bright whites.
