latest on "new" 928 rumors?
So what's the latest on Porsche bringing back the 928? Are they just rumors?
I've attached an article which suggests rumors and also check out this great article from encyclopedia.com (also includes Rennlist links! ).

The above picutre is old. Last time I spoke to people at Porsche, the project was on hold and no decidion to the shape and details had been made. That was about a month or two ago.
I think they are not in a hurry, since the Cayenne sells prety well. And they are possibly searching for a partner to share the platform with. I suspect this vould be VW and the future platform of the Phaeton's second generation.. But that is no more than a guess on my end...

I don't think it would make sense for Porsche to do this. More models would seem to hurt their 'exclusivity'. Look at used Boxsters and probably Cayennes in a few years. Adding another model I think would hurt the brand.

Sad thing is, the 928 and 924/944 were pioneers in the auto world. Setting the stage for other companies to copy for decades.
The new 928 is Porsche showing up late to the party with the same dress as somebody else. Aston Martin, Mercedes, Ferrari, and BMW realized years ago this was a market worth going after.
I hope the new Boxster is a hit, I was at the Mercedes dealer yesterday and the new SLK should be very popular.
If they had not dropped the 928 totally, maybe take a year off and brought to us a Ferrari 550 fighter back in 1997 - they would be leading the market not fighting for crumbs.

Porsche stock is about 50% held by members of the Porsche and Piech families The annual dividends distributed are running about 50,000,000 to 60,000,000 Euros per YEAR ........things are very good at Porsche .The remaining 50% is 25% Institutional Investors many in the U S , 25 % individuals . As I recall only the family stock has voting rights thus control of Porsche. They are too busy milking the cow to worry about racing , new model development ........and should they decide to sell the farm some may forget that Daisy may be a bit past her prime and spent too much time cavorting with V W.......But collector cars ,my owning a 1968 911 and a 1980 928 have contributed nothing to Porsche's bottom line for so long that they have forgotten about it. Porsche has even stated that their target market for the new Boxsteer is the owners of the old one .

I read somewhere that Porsche is going to announce soon (probably early '05) if not what the fourth model line will be, at least whether it will go upmarket (compete against Aston Martin & such) or downmarket (to compete in the ever-growing MX-5/affordable roadster market, which Boxter is too expensive for). Yes, they are considering going downmarket (but its unlikely they'll decide to).

I'd be extremely surprised, if Porsche went downmarket. Specifically, I couldnot see how they would make a profit that way.
On the other hand, with the Dollar being kind of worthless these days (compared to the EUro), their prices mighit go up or their margins will go down, maybe a little bit of both. In this situation it might be helpful to have something less expensive in the program to keep the volume up.
Nevertheless, I still don't think they would go there. It would mean to develop a whole new platform, a whole new small engine, or use parts from someone else.
I stick to moy theory that they might cooperate with VW again in developing a platform for a Porsche luxury coupe and VW Phaeton sedan.
