S4 to GTS Clutch
Has anybody done the swap from an S4 to a GTS clutch? My clucth shudders when starting out with the wheels turned, so that may be another project to tackle this winter. THat's up to 4 projects now. TB/WP, R&R the Intake, Change out to my new Test Pipes, and now some clutch work. I think my yearly cost just went up for thie year. I'll drag it into next year maybe.

I had a GTS clutch and kit installed on my '88 S4 about two years ago. The shop owner (who had a nice S4 5-speed as well) said that the GTS set-up provided lighter feel and better modulation. I think he was right, but it wasn't a very noticeable upgrade, in my opinion. And it cost an extra four hundred bucks or so. The previous S4 clutch lasted 54,000 miles. The GTS clutch lasted only 16,000 and it was toast. I don't do any DE or autocross or racing, and I don't think I'm that hard on a clutch. The shop that installed the GTS kit had done a lot of them, and they sure didn't think it was their problem. When the GTS clutch went out, I replaced everything again with S4 components. I certainly don't miss the GTS clutch.

Clutch discs are like brake pads the more you use them the quicker they wear. But brake pads are cheaper and easier to change so slowing the car down with the brakes is far, far better than downshifting and using engine braking. Short clutch life is nearly always a result of excessive slipping, too much engine speed when releasing the clutch or not matching engine speed when changing gears. The GTS pressure plate has somewhat increase clamping force , The release bearing has a plastic liner ,the late clutch arm uses the rubber insulated release bearing and the guide tube is a different diameter. The reduced pedal effort was a result of a modified pedal boost spring (helper) fitted as of 1992. The pressure plate with higher clamping should take MORE effort when used in a regular S-4. The friction disc is the same unit . As I recall, figure new clutch arm guide tube plus the "normal" pressure plate, friction disk , release bearing, guide tube and always do the pilot bearing $15 and plastic clutch arm bushing $16........ I can see no reason why the "GTS" clutch would wear more quickly than the old style.

So, Mr. Bailey, what parts would I need to do a full clutch job on my 1987 928S4 5-spd w/ LSD? the car has 45k miles on it. Most of those miles were from the previous owner he said he used it at the Watkins Glen many a time, I assume he's not familiar with Heel-toe to well. Anyway, I'd like to do the clutch job in the next few months. So what parts do I need and what do you guys charge per part? Feel free to send me a private e-mail on this. Is there any garage mans discount?
