Default 78 Euro fuel system WTF???

I'm going to try to phrase this as clearly as possible. We'll see how it goes. If this is becomes a confusing mess, please yell at me & I'll do my best to clarify.

Each of the three sources I have in front of me at this moment tells me different information about the location and number of fuel pumps on the car and the fuel filter. I intend to ignore my fuel filter issue for now

If I had only one source, or they all said the same thing, I would assume my car is different because it's a Euro. The fact that these three sources say three very different things bothers me more that I know it should. I guess I'm obsessive about collecting correct (for my car) information.

So far, I've found information stating that:

I have only one fuel pump. It's located under the plate beneath the tank. Interestingly, above the fuel tank, I have a wire bundle ending in mid air.

I would love to hear from anyone who's actually seen the 78 Euro fuel system. Should I indeed have only one fuel pump, or might a PO have messed with the fuel system?

        Kary,

The early cars went through quite a few revisions. There are 78's with two pumps which were supposedly put on cars destined for hot climates. This was to prevent vapor locks. The really fun part is trying to determine where your pump is located. On some the pump is behind the tanks and on others the pump is located at the back of the right rear fenderwell. Filters have been moved around also. All of them were wired with the same electricals irregardless of the number of pumps. BTW my 78 euro only had/has one external pump behind the tank. My 78 US is in the fenderwell. Not sure if the 78 US has an intank pump as I've never had to go there on it.

Cool, as long as I'm not the only one with this configuration, that's the way I'll put it back together.

        Thanks (again), Dennis.

I putted my fuel pump behind the fuel tank(under it, under the plate), I was looking for it in the fender, and din't find place to screw it on, so I suppose it under the tank. By the way, I have 1979 Porsche 5speed. Maybe it is different from 1978.

My '79 Euro had only 1 fuel pump and the wires were dangling. I had to change the pump and installed two pumps (correct part numbers for the pair) since the wiring was there.

        Rich,

Since it gets a LITTLE hotter in AZ than in Europe, the second pump was probably needed. Especially when in stop and go traffic.

        Klim,

By 79 they had settled on the under/behind tank position. They even moved the filter to that location on later year models.

Mine was originally a UK car (c16), with one pump under tank (and spare wiring for second pump)...then it spent 9 years in Saudi, with no apparent ill affects due to heat, once I sorted out the hot start wiring on the distributor.

        Rich9928p and jpitman2,

In your experience then, the extra wires I've found are likely for a second pump? Did yours look like my photo?

Not exactly, since my fuel pump is in now standard fuel pump area. How we confirmed that the spare wires were for the fuel pump, we traced them back to the fuel pump wires.

To confirm the function of the wires, just unwrap them and check to see if voltage is present when voltage is on the fuel pump.

Yes, more or less the same - taped up in the loom, trace back to merge with wires going to installed pump.

Both of my 78 Euro's have only one pump. I think the spare wires are for the optional flame thrower....

Early '78 MY cars have different setup than majority of the MY production. They use two full size pumps in series.
