Default Would anyone with experience trade their928 with a 951-tubo-S

Hi there. Anyone out there can give me some sort of comparator between the 928S4 and the 951-Turbo-S? What is your favorite and why? I have NO experience with the 951, but I feel I would enjoy a lighter car with easier /cheaper horsepower modifications. I've also been thinking about the 968! How doe's this car differentiate amongst the 951-turbo-S? Thanks in advance. ME

You are absolutly right about the lighter car and easier mods, what stops me is two things, I love the looks of the 928 and also the way it feels caved from granite. Great to have that protection, especially with all the 4WDs on the road these days. The 944 bodies just don't have that heavy build quality.

supercharge your S4 and dont look back! i like the 944/951 but i think they are too narrow and they should have more than 4 cylinders.

strip weight out of your car and feel the responsiveness increase.

Why go from a full 928 to a half one?

Just kidding!!! The 944 and 968 are great cars, but they are just not the same as a 928. There is a reason why a 928 was 1 1/2 times as expensive...

I have some experience with both - on most weekends I have one of each in my driveway. My son's 951 and my 928 (or two). I have also driven both on a racetrack.

The lighter weight of the 951 is obvious when you drive it. When set up right, they really corner like they are on rails. But, I find that the turbo is peaky and hard to performance drive - you want to throttle-on in the corner long before you have the wheels straight again - which you can do in the 928 easilly - but in the Turbo, if you throttle on within the corner and the boost comes in you just spin off the pavement. Very unpredictable.

I'm sure with a lot of seat time in one, you could know much better when the turbo is going to come in and when it isn;t, but I didn;'t like it.

I agree with drnick - SC your 928 and don't look back! You have the better of the 2 cars right now.

If you insist on going 944 Turbo - be sure to get a 87 or newer, avoid 1984, 1985 and 1986.

I own a turbo Cup which is outstanding on the track and had a 928GT which was outstanding on the freeway. A normal 951S would probably be a great road car what would work well on the track, just like a 928 but with less weight.

Myself I would probably drive the 951 faster than a 928 on a track, but I'd have equal fun in both. It does depend on the type of track also.. There is a reason why both cars are loved by it's owner - both boost and BWAAH is addictive.

I loved my 951. I love my 928S.

They're completely different animals. Drive one, then decide.

Anything less than an S4 would likely not be able to keep up with the 952, but then neither could anything less than a 952 keep up with an S4 if both were in stock trim. A 951/952 can be modded cheaply to run very fast and so can an S4. Apples and oranges though. You either prefer one or the other.

My first Porsche was an '86 951. I moded the heck out of it, mass airflow conversion w/chips, boost enhancer, cat bypass, and major suspension changes. That car was WAY faster than my 928GT. Example? On the track, long straight(3/4 mile), my 928GT hits 130mph coming off an 80mph corner, the 951 hit 160. Modded 951's tend to be a little fragile when run hard on the track though. I blew the headgasket twice in two years, the second one was the widefire version and o-ringed.

Despite the power advantage, and the lighter wieght, I was able to to lap within 1 second in my slightly softer sprung 928. The instant torque of the 928 is awesome, the 951 a little trickier as mentioned. The stability of the 928 suspension design is the key, heavy but planted.

As far as safety, well...I have to disagree with those suggesting the 944 series cars are weak. I have seen several crash well into triple digits on the track, and I have seen every driver walk away. I have seen them flip and roll multiple times in the crashes and the roof never crushed far enough to touch the roll bar. They are EXTREMELY tough from my experience.

What to do? Tough call, I would love to add a Turbo S, and a 993 to my fleet but, I will not part with the 928 to do so. The V8 is just too addictive and the 928 is the more pleasant for daily use. The 951 is going to be lighter and quicker FEELING but IMO the 928 when pressed is easily as capable.

I have a couple friends that track 968's, they absolutely LOVE those cars. They are as fast as a stock 951 but do not seem to be as fragile(headgasket) or as tricky exiting corners because of the NA engine. Pretty much all of the 944 series bugs have been worked out by the 968 series. They are modern looking, nice to drive, and probably the most reliable 944 version ever. Great handling cars, I just don't think I could go back to a four cylinder after the 928.

Keep the 928 and find a nice inexpensive '86 951. Contrary to an earlier comment the '86's have a lot going for them. They are the only 951 models to get forged rods and they are much more commonly found with the limited slip diff. I think they look cool on Fuchs wheels and they come sans airbag for an easy wheel upgrade. About the only nice thing they lack is ABS. All of the same mods apply to 86's, except newer offset wheels. There is a lot of bang for the buck in these cars, that is about the only similarity with the 928 though.

Pes, those 2 look all innocent and cute but they have that look in their eye saying " I'm conspiring against you in the shadows". Nice looking family there Bud. Dude, they look like they can easily be child actors.

I don't own a 951 but a very well maintained 944 S2 that I drove in Germany every day, just like I drive my GTS now. The 951 is a great and I owned an 87' for three years when it got totaled.
I bought my 944 S2 as a replacement and I wasn't sure if I like it because you are usede to the power of the 951. I think the S2 drives much better and the engine is VERY smooth, you can drive in 5th gear at 30 mph no problem. Try this with a 951! With the 951 you can either creep or let it scream. Don't underestimate the 951 parts prices! You can drive a 964 for the amount of money you possibly spend. The 944 S2 is only half of that and the fuel economy is great! The 968 is probably the best of the 4-cylinder series just like the GTS is for the 928. The one thing that I did not like with the 968 is the six speed tranny! Porsche increased power and torque and placed a six speed although you don't need it, you are forced to shift continously. The 944 gearbox fits much better, I think.
I would NOT trade a 951, 944, 968 or my 928 for another car! I just love to make a decision what I'm going to drive today!
