Heated seats - how do they work??
I sadly have no owners manual and was curious how to get the heated seats working (1989 S4).
I see a toggle switch that has a roller in the middle of it. I suspect the roller is some sort-of temperature control?
I've never tried the heated seats and it's getting chilly around here now-a-days. What I need to know is what position these switches must be in to produce heat and how long will it take for me to know if they are working or not?
Thanks
Jeff

I can't give you any info about the switches because since ours are working fine I've never taken them apart. But, I can tell you that with ours, about 20-30 seconds after switching on you can feel the heat.

So, does that roller switch control the temp or is it a duration of heat control?
I've seen the toggle switch and have often wondered if I have ever hit it by mistake when adjusting the seats - but I've yet to feel heat....so either my heat isn't working or I haven't hit the button correctly yet.
I'm gonna go play with it (the switch of course) for a bit right now....will report back!

I did manage to find some info in this on the web......
Seat heating system
The heating system in the seat cushion and backrest is switched on and off by pressing the rocker switch. On vehicles without seat position memory a timer deactivates the circuit after approx. 15 minutes if the heating system is not switched off manually.
On vehicles with seat position memory a timer circuit switches approx. 6 minutes after being activated from continuous heating to intermittent heating. In this case the seat will be heated for 20 seconds during 60 second intervals. To deactivate the heating system use the rocker switch or the ignition.
Press upper half of switch – heating on
Press lower half of switch – heating off
Now, I know how to turn it on...just went out and tried it - didn't seem to feel any heat, but it did get warm, but perhaps that was just my own butt heat. I'll turn it on for a longer period on the drive home and see what happens.
The one thing not mentioned in that write-up above is an explaination of what the roller in the middle of the toggle switch does. Anyone?

From the manual:
"heating temperature is controlled with the aid of the knurled **** set in the switch: the temperature is held constant until the heating or the ignition is switched off."
Turn knurled **** up to increase and down to reduce temperature.

Well, I turned on the seats last night and drove around for a bit. They don't **seem** to be working. I did feel a hot spot in my middle back though....maybe a placebo effect though.
Where exactly will the seats heat up at when working correctly?
If they are not working, my guess is a start looking at the fuses first, but then where do I go after that?

Fuses are a good idea - do you hear a relay click when switching on the rocker?
BTW, your orriginal wheel caps are now firmly in the 'hand painted' category - look nice, even better on my car ..... but you can claim them ....

Well, as I recall, many years ago when I last used mine (which was doing the same as you just seeing if it actually worked), there was a very nice and warm feeling right under my big ol' tush. Maybe my back too, but don't recall as well. My own feeling is that if they don't work, its not something I would expend too much time or money trying to fix. My heater starts putting out good heat within a few minutes of start up. If it gets too cold, a nice set of Stanfield's longies works just fine.

(also sent you an e-mail regarding oil-change/belt tension/mirror swap/center caps).
sharkmeister85 - I agree that spending too much time on the seats isn't something I should be worried about. I find these cars warm up VERY fast...almost scary fast. My temp gauge will be sitting at stone-cold and heat pumps out like it's been running for hours. to the 928 heat!!

Boy,
I will be in Nova Scotia on July 15-16 for my Annual Business Meeting. I'll be expecting some beer and too see some pics in person. I'll bring my jewelers glass for authentication of the finer details.
