What's the difference in the Workshop Manuals often seen on eBay?
Some sets are in red binders, some in grey binders. Some are "complete" sets of 6, 8 or 9 binders.
What's the deal?
On eBay, there's a set of (red) books 1-4 that's going for $150 in a little while - there's another set (grey) that's 'Buy It Now' for $270, that has volumes 1-3, vol 3 book 2, vol 4 and vol 6. What's missing from these? What's the point of spending hundreds on an incomplete set?
Does anyone know of any retailers who still have complete sets for sale?
Any opinions on what volumes it might be OK to pass on?

An early set of books red might cover everything up to say 1983 but nothing on newer cars . The grey sets were all 9 books and there is something in nearly every book that covers the 1978 . As time passed the sets became more and more books to hold all the new material but each section like engine has all the engine information. Porsche printed new manuals BUT thought they were worth like $1,200 retail ,they have been removed from the market.

My red books cover up to 1994.....I'll have to go double check on that....
Yep...the entire volume VIII is on the 1994 GTS. The volumes are labeled
I, I-A, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII

kary4th,
You may want to email the seller and ask him if the books have updates/pages in them for 85-86, 87 onwards. Also ask the seller what areas the volumes cover such as, Engine, Transmission, etc etc... The volumes should all be labeled. I imagine if it is only 3 or 4 volumes that the set is not complete.

There were several versions of the red set different numbers of books so four red books COULD be a complete early set or only half of a later set !

Don't buy them. Contact Jim Morehouse here on Rennlist instead. That is what I'm doing after the holidays He has a set of cds that have good info. I am told. I'd rather have them on cd since i'm computer friendly. My opinion...

Beware of photocopies!

I aquired the CDs myself, and am quite happy with the quality... the pages are crisp and clear, and the format is Adobe PDF.
For the relevant parts (stuff i'll be using...) i'm going to go to Kinkos and print them on hole-punched paper, and make my own binders. This allows me to get them dirty and/or destroyed, since I can always reprint messed up pages.
For the price, it's the way to go... though i imagine it could cost a couple of hundred to print and bind them all.

Also be careful of the e-bay deal, for frauds!! I was ripped off for a $300.00 set. The good news was that I purchased the item with PayPal which was backed with my VISA. E-bay aacknowledged that I'd been burnt, because a half-dozen others had been, too. That went to PayPal who snagged the $$$ from the perp's account (all $1.58 of it) and said they considered the case closed. I called VISA and they reversed the transaction within a week! I got a e-mail from PayPal suggesting that if I ever did that again, they'd cancel my account. Sounds like VISA held PayPal accountable for the transaction. YA!!
