Salt watch: How long will it be before the Porsche beds down for the winter?
I am trying to drive my car as much as possible before the snow flies... every day driven is a good day. But how long will it last?
Any day now, it could snow or sleet, and the roads get salted. Then my fun is over until spring...
The latest I've been able to drive is Thanksgiving. I wonder if I'll make it?
Oh, this is the only part of winter I detest...

A few years back I was with a friend and met a girl. She asked what kind of car I drove. I said, "I can't tell you, you'll think I'm an A**hole." So I mentioned that I had a BMW and a Porsche. Well a couple days later, I had to observe the two day call back rule, we arranged a date. She told me to drive the Porsche. No snow yet and its was the second weekend in December. I picked her up and her friends asked if it was a Corvette. She didn't believe it was a Porsche and had to walk around the back to read it. Well we ended up falling in love and getting married last August.
Anyway, that year I was able to drive it into early-mid December without salty roads. I'm in Upstate (Rochester) NY.

When I bought my 928 back in 1987 it was the winter without snow. I drove the car all winter! Hasn't happened since then. I usually call it quits when I put the snow tires on my wife's Audi, which tends to be around the end of November.
This year I'm looking for a steering fluid leak that I haven't been able to pin down, and I just spend my maintenance budget on my Villager (first major expense in 10 years of ownership) so I don't have the funds to let the dealership look at it, so it my be going to bed early this fall...

We're @ the day by day stage. It snowed last week but has since melted off the highways so we're good to go 'till the next fall. Like most folks we don't stray too far from home unless you totally believe the forecast. Winter is long enough in this part of the world so will run the car 'till I cant drive it up the driveway without spinning out which was the case this time last year.......need a little downtime for TLC anyway but 6mths!!!

We're done with driving the 928. Left Sharktoberfest on Sunday morning (later than anticipated) and only beat the snow home by 5 hours. Yesterday it snowed and we got about a foot overnight. It is snowing today and will snow tomorrow, maybe 3 feet more.
I hope Eric and Richard can beat the storm on their way back to Colorado.
Our shark is going to sleep for the winter.

My cars go into hybernation on the US Thanksgiving holiday. This winter they have a new stable mate. I was looking to add a Euro to the collection this year, but found an exceptional one of these instead, complete off body restoration...couldn't pass it up.
Next year for the Euro.....

Ah the quest to recapture long lost youth ...... buying a car from your past all to often it is like going back for the High school 25 year reunion and finding that that 18 year old Hottie you dreamed about for so many years has "matured" .

Well, you make a good point.....however this 30 year old (the TR6 ya degenerate...) has had a full, body off professional restoration......
2.5 liters, 8.5 to 1 compression......I wonder what Mr Tim Murphy would say about that.......
Anyway...back to the original thread......ALL the high end toys are going in the barn till the spring.... Time to break the sleds out and get them ready for "white gold"..............
If you live in the white mountains, you hafta make peace with old man winter....

Well it hasn't snowed here yet, but my car don't run. If i can get it to run before snow sets in I'll take her for a spin.
I've thought about putting her in hibernation allready and do alot of work this winter... time will tell I guess.

I do it day-by-day. I rent a garage further inland (I'm close to Lake Michigan/Lake Shore Dr) for the winter and put the 928 and 911 away after Thanksgiving. I'll prep the 944 for winter driving (snow tires on scruffy phone dials, used motor oil the bottom, hoping to add heated seats this year) and keep on keepin' on. On a clear, cold weekend without snow, I'll wake up one of the other two and make a long-distance high speed run to keep it exercised. Chicago always gets cold, but we often don't get a lot of snow. On really sloppy snow days, I take the train to work and leave the 944 - I don't want some moron sliding into me.

Parked the 928 beside the 944 in the garage at my cabin about ten days ago. The next day, four inches of snow fell in the yard affirming they were parked for the winter. I'd drive the 944 through the winter except that it needs new tires and I prefer to sell it rather than make a tire selection a prospective owner will inevitably disagree with. It would also have to sit outdoors or else I have to scrape windows on either my or my wife's daily driver (both 4WD). The 928 has virtually no rust even on the underside. Why mess with that?
Jim, my first car was a GT6. As a university student, you learn to fix it or you just can't drive it. Its not too impressive to chicks parked behind the boarding house. With no tread on any of the tires, I white-knuckled it through snow and had both the tailights repeatedly pulled off by well intended pedestrians admiring my sense of winter adventure while pushing me out of snowbanks. I did several Toronto/Chicago round trips in mid winter over a couple of years.
My motto from owning that car became "ATTITUDE - THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AND ORDEAL AND AN ADVENTURE" Does this sound like something in common with 928 owners?
Gretch. Contratulations on your TR6.. I share your appreciation for the nostalgia.
