Default Power Steering Hose Question

I purchased new power steering hoses for my 84 and 87. Both are the low pressure hose between the reservoir and the pump. On the original one removed from the 87, there appears to be a solid tube of some sort inside the hose about halfway down. It is clamped in place from the outside by two small hose clamps. At first I thought it was a junction between two hoses, but it is definitely one continuous hose with something inside. The new hose (928 347 445 05) does not have that piece inside it. Can anyone tell me what that is? It's not shown in the manuals, or in PET, and I did a Rennlist search but found nothing. I could cut the old hose apart to see, but I don't want to destroy it until I understand what that piece inside does. Am I supposed to somehow get that into the new hose?

Thanks very much, Mark

Mark, IIRC, there is to be a restrictor orfice in one of the PS hoses; however, I thought it was to be on the pressure side vs the return. This is more of a 'bump' for a valid question, for I am uncertain of the correct answer - perhaps someone who has recently replaced a hose will chime in ....

Garth, I removed the power resavor and associated plumbing on my S4 and didn't find any sleeves inside the hoses. I would suspect that Mark's hose was colapsing and that was a temporary fix.

Good call re the low pressure hose! - I believe : It is the high pressure hose (pump to rack) that (often) has an internal orfice/restrictor. It is located under the fairly large plastic ring that keeps the hose from rubbing on the fender.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I went ahead and cut the hose apart, and inside was a 3" section of clear rigid plastic tubing. It must have been for reinforcement like cambria suggested. It was right in the center of the long horizontal run, so perhaps there's a tendency for the hose to buckle or collapse there. Ironically, it was indeed a restrictor too, since it had collapsed and taken a set, in the two places where the hose clamps were squeezed on it. It was a tube with two inline venturis, sort of like a double hour glass. I installed the new hose without it, so we'll see what happens.

Thanks again, Mark.
